kaluce 0
Hi, I just converted my 7.62, but i still have to do the bullet guide. I have a flat trunnion and I'm not sure how far forward toward the magazine I should be pushing the bullet guide. I have the piece from CSS, but the tapered bit on the metal shim doesn't go all the way to the back of the barrel (if it's supposed to overhang a little), so I'm a bit confused and I don't want to ruin my gun doing it Edit: I forgot to attach pics. this picture shows the guide against the barrel. kaluce 0
Yes, but my bullet guide doesn't overhang when i put it under the barrel, so i was worried about how far to put it in.
geofri 4
Don't take my post as truth without further investigation, But I think more overhang(BG being closer towards magazine) is better for feeding a shorter bullet(hollowpoints)
ripcuda 5
Perhaps a tad late to help you... Think about what the bullet guide is trying to do. Put the stock Saiga mag next to a regular AK mag. Look at the front/forward lips on both... side by side. You will see the Saiga mag is higher... whereas the AK mag has a "notch" which makes it lower in the front. Now slide a bullet out of each mag over that front lip. You will see the higher lip of the Saiga mag lifts the bullet tip up higher as it slides over. The regular AK mag doesn't lift the tip. This is because regular AK's have a bullet guide on the gun to lift the bullet tip up to the ramp... whereas the Saiga does not... it relies on the higher front lip of the mag to do this. So to make the Saiga work with normal AK mags... we install our own bullet guide. Now ideally, you want that bullet guide as far rearward as can be installed so that it does the same thing as the front lip on the Saiga mag... but no further than that lip. If you put it too far rearward... the Saiga mag will no longer be usable because the high front lip will catch the bullet guide preventing the mag from locking in. On the other hand, as long as the regular AK mags fit with their lower/notched front lips and don't catch on the bullet guide... this would work fine. You would just not be able to use the Saiga mags I wanted to be able to still use the stock Saiga mag... so I attached the Saiga mag... then slid the bullet guide rearward until it just touched the front lip of the Saiga mag. I marked the hole and installed mine there. This works fine for my normal AK tanker mags. It raises the bullet tip just enough to get it onto the ramp. I've put about 100 rounds through it with the bullet guide without any problems. And my Saiga mag also works too. Hope that helps, Cheers!
ripcuda 5
Followup to my previous post. I got some pictures to help illustrate. Here is what the bullet guide does. It lifts the tip of the bullet so it lands on the ramp and guides its way into the chamber Here is why we need it. Regular AK mag on the left... see the notch? Saiga mag on the right... higher front lip. This higher front lip does the same thing as the bullet guide. Here you can see my bullet guide with regular AK mag (left)... front lip below bullet guide because of notch. And with Saiga mag (right) that just kisses the bullet guide. Here you can see my bullet guide installed. It does overhang the rear just a tad. If I did it again, I'd position the bullet guide just a tad further rearward and file the Saiga mag to fit. It would better raise the bullet tip onto the ramp with regular AK mags. But it does work fine as installed. Over 100+ rounds so far... zero issues. Cheers!

Foxtail207 23
+3 ripcuda, Very nice, clear presentation. That cleared up a lot of things for me. I want to use both the milspec and Saiga mags without mods to the Saiga mags. I think I'll try this BG fit up method. Nice work!

Tram 11
Nice write up. Wouldn't it be just as easy to run all modified mags?
ripcuda 5
Glad the pictures helped. A picture is worth a thousand words... Nice write up. Wouldn't it be just as easy to run all modified mags? Easiest option would be to run only Saiga mags with the tall front lip on them. Then you wouldn't need to install a bullet guide at all. But if you want to use mil-spec AK mags (the ones that have the notched front lips)... you need a way to raise the bullet tip up onto the chamber ramp. Thus a bullet guide is required. Cheers!
