Ak Syndicate 0
I heard from source that ak-74 ammo will not be around forever but hard to believe when that is russian military ammo for most part. Any body know?

Any body know? The military surplus (7N6) won't be imported forever, it will eventually dry up. I believe the Russians went with a different bullet design sometime in the 90's rendering the 7N6 obsolete to them... thus it's status as 'surplus'. However, you're forgetting about all of the commercial ammo that is imported from Russia. Nothing short of a ban on all imported ammunition will make that stuff go away. Even if that did happen, Hornady produces 5.45x39mm ammo domestically... and given the amount of rifles in use in the U.S., if the market were to open up for it, they would all start producing ammunition in that caliber. Long story short, its not worth worrying about.

Domestically-produced, brass-cased stuff would probably cost on the order of $.60-$1.00 a round...

breid1970 327
I really wish that I had gotten the 5.45 here. The ammo is sooo plentiful where I am. Sad really.

I can still find tins of 545 at my local Fleet Farm. Guess the 5.45 really hasn't caught on around here.
S12KS-K 40
I was kind of hoping back in 2009 that 5.45 never caught on. I miss paying about a hundred dollars for a thousand rounds of one of the best small arms calibers.
sirosisofliver 3
Golden Tiger (Vympel) is producing it now...SGAmmo has a listing for 1000rds/$249 non corrosive..I could get to like that..
Landis 3
As long as they import surplus I will buy it. Ironic, I'm buying bullets made in the Cold War by a former enemy with the purpose of killing me, but it is turning out as the happiest of possible endings. Excellent round and rifle though. Russians/Soviets did some things very well. Edited August 16, 2013 by Landis
Landis 3
I also want to point out that the "corrosive" surplus isn't that corrosive. Now I keep my rifle wet with oil when I shoot it, so that may help the corrosion issue, but I have left a rifle uncleaned a couple days and found no rust. And in past rifles long gone, mostly Ruger Mini 14 and 30, as well as a SAR2 all using Wolf, supposedly not corrosive, I have had rust issues to the point of effecting the function of the rifle. I honestly don't think 7n6 is much if any more corrosive than the typical Wolf or Bear brands, in my experience anyway. Edited August 16, 2013 by Landis
rickyrifle 1
I agree; I used to live in South Texas close to the coast and I remember my blued steel 9mm would rust just from carrying it. Now that I'm in North Texas, I shoot my 5.45 with 7n6 at matches regularly and sometimes go a few days without cleaning it, with maybe...just maybe...a hint rust (certainly nothing like my old 9mm.) I also want to point out that the "corrosive" surplus isn't that corrosive. gungammer 0
Might want to look inside your gas tube sometime soon.
BigChongus 765
Depends on the humidity where you live. Someone in Arizona probably wouldn't have much of an issue. If you live in Florida you're going to need to keep up on it.
rickyrifle 1
Might want to look inside your gas tube sometime soon. I did; it's part of my cleaning routine. I use the Travis Haley method: run some water through it - well, he dunks it in a pond; I disassemble and run it under the shower.. Finally, I let it air dry (or facing a box fan set on high.) A little WD-40 will displace the water in the hard to reach places. Edited August 20, 2013 by RickyRifle
XD45 7,124
SGAmmo is advertising 2160rd cans for $358, "Coming Soon". I don't have a 5.45 any more (I weep for my long departed SAR2) and haven't kept up on price/availability so I don't know if this is good or not. I wish I could get 7.62 for that price... BigChongus 765
I saw that too. That's actually really good compared to everyone else right now. If I didn't already have a metric crap ton of 5.45 I'd be on that like white on rice. It comes out to $189 per spam can shipped, or $0.17 a round shipped for me. Most others are upwards of $210 a can plus shipping.
