  1. 338 Lapua would probably be the most accurate round. I believe it's heavy enough not to be finicky. You'd be best off to reload it yourself so every round would be consistant, and talk about a fast moving flat shooting round. Yeehaw!!! But if you're looking to stay under $800 and not lose your shirt on ammo, 308 is probably best. Might look into a Remington 700, Tikka, Sako, or Savage. Sako is nicest followed closely by Remington and Tikka. Savage is a category to itself. It's such a great value the others can't really compare.
  2. I have no doubt the 30-06 is the most versatile round/gun there is. As GOB said, any animal and all weights are available. Literally, one gun can cover any North American animal, which is AWESOME, though each different round will shoot much differently and you'd have to re-zero optics with any major change. This is not a big deal, and it's a helluva a lot cheaper than rockin' out 3 or 4 rifles to cover everything from rabbits to mooses, but it's tougher to get used to the rifle. It really depends on what you're looking for. If you're main purpose is hunting and you want versatility,
  3. Can I just ask why a 30-06? I'll agree it's a great round, but isn't its ballistic profile a bit more unpredictable than a 308, .300 mag or 7mm mag? I'd take a VERY serious look at the Sako 75 Synthetic Stainless, the Tikka Varmint Lite (Special Order), Tikka Lite Stainless (also check laminated stainless), or Savage 116FCSS. The Sako 75 is by far the nicest, but most expensive. The Tikka is just a cheaper Sako. And the Savage is affordable, box-fed, and has one of the best triggers you could hope to find. Those are my suggestions.
  4. The original design will be a guide to be sure I can get that right...from there I think I have an idea for a drop release mag-well. Hopefully with Lonestar and Cobra on the LRBHOs, Ian and Kevin on the magazines, and a few of us on the mag-wells these things will be outfitted in no time.
  5. Are there any regulations on FedEx? Obviously, I'm not going to be shipping ammo, but do I have to use a specific center, declare it as a firearm, etc. etc.? I've not been too happy with UPS either.
  6. Search UPS website for shipping firearms...it's pretty strait forward. No FFL is needed. Must use a UPS pickup or one of their service centers. NO AMMO. Must get an adult signature upon delivery. Insure it. Just check out the UPS site for all the details.
  7. The swat-magwell uses a different type of magazine which has everyone worried about copying it. Especially with the new 10rnd magazines coming up...perhaps it'd work, perhaps not. From my understanding it most likely wouldn't work without some major modifications.
  8. I'd do a search on this board to find out about Elite. I'd also search AR15.com and AK47.net I think. Dave has gotten a lot of very negative reviews. Maybe he's cleaned his act up, but I would suggest using one of the other gunsmiths that has an immaculate reputation like Tromix (Tony Rumore) or Tom Cole.
  9. Along these same lines...I'm curious about putting the following brake on my S12. I have extended choke tubes, so how would I go about getting this brake threaded and my chokes threaded to match? Machine shop? Or gun smith? Or what? Any ideas? Thanks!
  10. Do you know the threading of the chokes? Rem-choke or Win-choke or...? Beautiful gun!
  11. That's actually an idea...it could be rigged so that you don't even have to pinch both at the same time. Use an extended lever on the rear mag-release so that it can be done with your trigger finger and add another lever to that that controls the front release too. It's simple, but simple works. I'll try to work it in if it's not too much trouble or expense to include. Thanks for the insight!!! If it works, we all owe you one CrazyJ.
  12. Pretty pretty. How's it attach? Can it be threaded? Price? Thanks!!!
  13. The first prototype is probably a month or so away. I'm pretty new at all of this, so it's taking some time to figure out what material to use for strength and cost-effeciency, and how best to make the design a reality. Not to mention, how is it gonna attach to the gun? Rivets, screws, tensioning screws, etc.? It's coming along, but I would prefer a strait feed mag-well if possible. I just don't have the know-how to make it.
  14. The mag-well I've been designing is made to ease the rocking motion. It aligns the magazine with the receiver so that the placement is effortless for a quick, easy, and most importantly consistant rock-in. It's not as ideal as a strait feed mag-well, but it means neither the gun nor the magazines need to be modified. If combined with an LRBHO and an extended release lever, it will be the shooting that slows a Saiga owner down more than a reload.
  15. That cost only $500? I "bargain built" mine and it ran me about $750 and it has no quad-rail. Where'd you get the rail for that affordable? Usually they run like $200.
  16. Welcome, we'd all be glad to help you. I'd suggest the first step that you ought to take is searching through the board and learning as much as you can that way to most narrowly tailor your questions. You mentioned you're considering doing a conversion and were looking for good places to get parts...what type of conversion were you looking to do? If you get the chance, flip through as many posts as you can and pick out what parts you'd be interested in getting and we can try to help you find them cheapest. Do you want a folding stock, collapsable stock, any additional goodies like side-
  17. Quick note...I've shot Tom Cole's full auto S12 and it IS an amazing gun. But it does have some serious muzzle rise by the time you go through 8 rounds. It's the first automatic weapon I've ever fired, so I probably don't have the right technique to control it, but full auto is not easy to control with any gun from my understanding, but a 12ga especially. Perhaps with better technique and a muzzle brake it would be easier for me, but the select fire (burst shots) is where it is really useful.
  18. For real...$300 S12 unless it's a botched project gun is a great price. I'd buy that up with a quickness, if nothing else you can turn around and sell it for a profit.
  19. Ok, so this is a question probably belonging in another thread, but it goes well in the course of this one. AR vs. AK? What's the general consensus as to the better gun? I'm saying I want to compete with an AR, I'd want to fight with an AK. My wallet wants 4 AKs, instead of 1 AR, however I only own an AR.
  20. It's different for each individual gun and the condition of the gun at any given time. Obviously, a super clean/lubricated gun will cycle better than a gunky one, but there's factors besides these that effect it. The type load you're using will also make a difference. If you have a buffer, that will probably make a difference. I can't say for sure, but I am confident that most any gun would need some gas port adjustment if cut back to 16". That's not to say that they all do, some I imagine would be fine with any load. Give it a try, and if worse comes to worse, open up the ports is my
  21. For a KICKASS upper at a great price check the upper listed Here. I'm really close to forking up the money for it, but I would prefer a bolt action 30-cal (308 or 338) instead. Might be a good idea for you.
  22. Best bet is to search on UPS's website and it has some info on shipping guns. FFL is not needed, but there are a few things that must be done that are listed there. The main thing is you have to either call to have it picked up, or you have to go to a service center: not just any UPS place can ship a firearm. Be sure to get insurance!!!
  23. Well it's good to hear that it's not my size that makes me print, but sad to hear that it's unavoidable. Luckily, I don't think many would realize that I'm carrying b/c nobody around the parts I frequent knows what a gun looks like besides from Hollywood. I have the kel-tec P3AT that is cake to conceal, but I like the reliability and power of my .45. The Kel-tec isn't bad, and I would gamble my life on it, but I wouldn't trust my life on it, whereas the H&K I trust my life on. But that's why I got the two guns: one for those times when I needed ultra-concealed carry and the other
  24. Don't keep us in suspense, pictures pictures! You might can make the grenade launching buttpad work, I think that fits the stock. It's not a full inch, but it's an improvement.
