jStat 0
I already have 2x 30rd. Surfires, plus the factory 10. How many more would you guys think is adequate? Mind you, I also have an SKS(should trade for one that accepts AK magazines), so it's not like I'd HAVE to rely strictly on the Saiga.....but I would like to. I also have 4 magazines for my Glock, if that means anything. Edited April 1, 2007 by jStat
Bvamp 604
think ten minutes of controlled and aimed gunfire. i would say, minimum of 6, for the main gun, with stripper clips and feed towers for them, or ten mags, or 300 rounds. 20 rounders, 12 to start. what you REALLY need is the extra ammo. not the ability to fire it all off as fast as you might need to. make SURE you dont forget the 22LR SOLID nose case. that is what feeds you, if you care about prepareing for that sort of thing. if you use the weapon effectively, you dont need more than a couple of mags to sort any situation. you can always reload them with more ammo later. Juggernaut 11,054
During the Gulf War we were issued a combat load of 240 rounds. (6 full mags+6 stripper clips) For some strange reason I have always stuck with that formula for all my guns. However, if there were a class 3 Zombie outbreak, you would need to dig up that surplus you buried back in the early 90's
Oswald2001 0
IMO, do the bullet guide mod. Buy at least 10 Galil Orlites. Then, several thousand rounds of SHTF ammo.

I also have 4 magazines for my Glock, if that means anything. I would simply suggest that 'you are the best judge.' Period. Having suggested that, I would recommend that you have enough for what you do NOT expect. Mags are cheap - if in doubt, I might suggest multiplying your first guess-timate by at least two. Just my ignorant opinion. Remember, mags are currently cheap and (given our tendencies towards Socialist government - that means Democrat party, for those of you who might be wondering) they tend to go up in value. Just my opinion... ;>)

gandog56 0
I also have 4 magazines for my Glock, if that means anything. Well I have 11 mags for my DW Razorback, and 12 for my SA 1911A1. But for my Saiga I have 3 thirty's and 3 ten rounders.
dinzag 31
Yeah, zombies Jugg, that's it. You need 30+ for each weapon...and a big a$$ backpack. Ya don't have time for reloading when you gotta pop 1000 of 'em in one session.
vjor 2
Minimal 4 30 rounders + 1 on rifle max as many you can afford Good set up and cheap, Chinese chest rig 3 mag and 5 mags side carry pouch let you move and not cumbersome light to carry around Cheaper than dirt has them for like 10 bucks or less and the 5 rounds side pouches like 8 bucks, really well made. http://cheaperthandirt.com/BAG187-48033-2714.html http://cheaperthandirt.com/AKS701-45529-2714.html

I have 10+ of those set ups. Price is right, ergonomics are there, light, efficient, flexible (you can easily sling the 5 mag side carry bag on or off in seconds). 9 mags = 1 in the well and 8 in web gear 9 Galil mags @ 35 rounds each = 315 loaded rounds That makes a serious set up. If you can't solve 'the problem' in 315 rounds...
TonyRumore 1,332
Just one magazine. That gives you time to drink a beer while you reload it. ;-) Tony

okie shooter 0
In reality you only need one, if all you are going to do is shoot at the range, as for the shtf, its only as many as you can carry in some ways. When the shtf all you will need is what ever you can hump. There was an intersting article on the net about the British Marine in the falklands war, he had twenty or so fal mags, plus two hundred rounds of bandolered 308, but still spent alot of the time rummageing over the battlefield looking for ammo and mags off the enemy. Bad Bob 0
Good set up and cheap, Chinese chest rig 3 mag and 5 mags side carry pouchlet you move and not cumbersome light to carry around Excellent advice, sir! What nobody has mentioned here is that the Chicom chest rig won't be any problem at all if you're sitting in a vehicle. Think about that for a minute or two... ;>) FWIW, I've got a '3-30 rounder' Chicom chest rig for my Saiga (the Orlites fit great! ;>) and a '5-20 rounder' rig for my AR (the Adventure Line 20-rd mags also fit great ;>). No need to sit on your mags! ;>)
vjor 2
Yup chest rigs are good, and yes like Bad Bob say you can drive is never in the way, the chicon is cheap as cheap can be but is one of my favor ones, light, not hot when you use it like a tactical vest and can be taken off and on in a zip same for chicon mag pouches, they dont even look to tactical at all but they work really well for what you pay for it, and yes galil mags fit perfect on them as ak, ar15 mags, if the shit hits the fan and you have to move and a lot of people dont think that they going to have to walk and you can carry some ammo and probably rifle and pistol, more than that you will be in a lie if you think you can walk 10 miles with shit load of ammo and shit load of guns and provisions plus been on guard all the time, especially the old guys like my self, now if you still a young buck and good shape, I guess about 9 mags full for rifle and about 5 for pistol plus knife and other stuff like water and provisions and be able to fight, I guess you have to be realistic on what you can do and cant if not load your self one hunting season 50 pounds back pack and rifle, pistol and ammo and take a 10 miles walk see how you feel after few miles. Pointer 21
I keep at least 6 mags per rifle,3 for handgun but the more the better.Im pretty stocked up on mags for the main guns that get used most or might be for future zombie intrusions. 30 AR 30rd's 30 AK 30&40rd 7.62x39 18 Galill 35&50rd .223 mags double duty for Saiga & Galil 25 Fal 308 20&30rd 20 Cetme 308 20&30rd 8 Saiga12 8&10rd 8 Glock 40s$w 15rd
Oswald2001 0
Part of the beauty of using the 2 Chinese pouches are that you can sling off the 5 mag side carry pouch if it's too heavy. Or you can toss it to a friend that uses the same mags.

Gray-haired-old-fart's Third Rule of Life (at this point in my calculations): Reliable mags are your friends...
