  1. I guess I'm one of those crazy people who think my rifle isn't a contestant in a fashion show. Function > Form
  2. Where did you get that wood furniture for the PTR-91? They both look nice.
  3. The Winchester 123 gr Super-X SP expands really well and is more effective than any of the Russian or surplus cartridges. It does cost more but so does all good hunting ammunition.
  4. NCStar is the bottom of the Barrel. You might take a look at a POSP; pretty arrodable as far as glass goes.
  5. I like how everyone just rattles off their favorite caliber, though there is also some good advice here. Accuracy: 7.62x39 has most difficult external ballistics, with the highest hold-over at 300 yards. In general it is noticeably less accurate than the other rifle calibers at 100 yards and definitely at 200, but it can definitely effectively engage man-sized targets at those ranges. .308 is really the only caliber that delivers significant energy past 400 yards. Ammo availability: .223, .308 are very very common domestic calibers and you can always find this ammunition in Walmart, sp
  6. I put a tritium front-sight post on most of my rifles. I do find it easier to acquire in the daytime as well with the color contrast, although if you switch the rear blade for aperature sight you probably wouldn't have this problem. I used this post: http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/SCP865-6.html
  7. Thanks for collecting this data. I'm actually pleasantly surprised, we don't give up nearly as much velocity as I expected. Consider these #s, where they tested using 26" and 22" barrels - your Black Hills 168gr is less than 200 fps down from their 26" 700. http://www.snipercentral.com/matchammo.htm
  8. No, M14 mags are expensive. I don't see the point in AR-10 mags either, unless what he actually means are SR-25 mags, which are the only type p-mags are made for (as found in SR-25, DPMS .308, LWRC .308, etc.) Armalite's AR-10 uses a modified M14 mag and its as expensive as any Saiga .308 mag.
  9. You can get a torch with a liter of propane for like $15 at Walmart.
  10. BattleRifle3G makes custom furniture - depending on how specific of a look you want it may be worth emailing him about it. http://www.dinzagarms.com/furniture/brg3.html
  11. I would have tried a little propane torch I think, but odds are I would have ended up with it at a gunsmith's as well if it was really that tight.
  12. Only problem with the Romanian set from Centerfire is parts count because its all imported. From what I have read at least, the ATF does consider that stock to have a pistol grip due to the angle of the grip. So 922r applies and I think the only way to make parts count is to use some US parts in your magazines if you are using that entire set. An alternative would be get that set just for the stock and order handguards from Ironwood but they wouldn't match unless you refinished the stock which sort of defeats the purpose...
  13. I don't know about best but MAA has them. http://www.mississippiautoarms.com/saiga-308-rifle-iz138-p-230.html
  14. Yes I'm trying to figure out how I can need another rifle in 7.62x39, because that rifle does look pretty nice.
  15. If you look at the numbers, they are not much different. Individual cartridge loads vary far more than the median performance of the two chamberings. The .308 was designed to replicate the performance of the .30-06 in a cartridge that could be more easily adopted to be magazine fed. They did not duplicate it exactly, but it is closer than most people think. http://www.rifleshootermag.com/ballistics/30_06.html http://www.rifleshootermag.com/ballistics/?url=/ballistics/308_winchester.html&x=2&y=3
  16. I had to take a dremel to it to get mine off.
  17. I agree the 10rd mags are a bit unwieldy, I like AGP's 8-rounders better myself although I mostly use a 20rd drum. I don't normally pass on 3rd-hand experiences have heard too many bad things about Promag for me to ever buy anything from them.
  18. I'd get a drum; at the current price if you decide you don't like it then you will be able to get your money back. But I like mine quite a bit, and I thought I got a good deal getting it at only $100 ! I also like the AGP 8-round mags, they are more expensive than the 10 but they are a more reasonable size in my opinion; for one thing I can fit one in a chest rig designed for AK mags (they are bigger than an AK mag though and will not fit in all pouches designed for AK mags). I have a couple surefire 10 rounders and they work fine too but the AGP seems a higher quality magazine to me.
  19. Has anyone used the Troy Micro flip-up BUIS? I can't find any specs that will tell me exactly how high these sit. I am considering them instead of the Chaos sights to sit on my Chaos extended rail. They are more expensive but I like the ability to easily move them to one of my rifles if needed. But I know the Chaos sights will co-witness with a T-1 or Primary Arms Micro without putting it on a riser. I currently have a Primary Arms Gen 2 and it sits really low, too low for example Magpul BUS. The sight is very comfortable without a riser so I'd buy the Chaos sights before putting it on on
  20. So the picture of the guy with the chisel is real inspiring and all, but after about a half hour of tapping and getting maybe an 1/16" through the rear fixed sight, my Dremel is start to look pretty spiffy. Do I some reason need that little nub of material forward of the sight after the rail covers it?
  21. I say its up to you as an individual. Are the you kind of guy who dives in and does stuff even if it might be unfamiliar? I personally procrastinated my conversion over a year. If I'd had a guy offer to do it for $110...done. Its all how you value your own time though. I think there is a lot to be said for being familiar with your weapon and I think it will give you a bit of pride...but at the end of the day what we want is a good rifle with good fit, finish, ergonomics and trigger pull. You can get that yourself, but if you can also get it pretty cheap, might be worth it.
  22. Its possible it has - it wasn't mentioned in the auction and I haven't actually received it yet. But it wouldn't need to be; I know some people do put a Tapco FCG in them to get parts count but this one still has a thumb-hole stock so there is no particular reason the owner would have done that, its still in a "sporting" configuration.
  23. I'm sure this has been asked before, but here goes again. I have an AKM that makes the parts count even when using foreign magazines. I'm getting another, this one is an SLR-95 and I'm not really inclined to switch out the FCG because its already got a good one. This makes the part count harder - though I can easily get there if I use US magazines. I have a couple. I also have a couple dozen foreign mags. As long as I only use the US ones with the SLR, it shouldn't matter that I have the other mags right? Especially as I have a rifle which can legally use them? Thanks, J.C.
