  1. Attached are close up pictures of the magwell and the mag. The mag is retained in a very typical mag retention method with male part of latch into female notch in the mag. The lever is steel and is very solid. Mag retention is secure and I've never had a mag drop out. As discussed, mag insertion is straight and can be easily done on a closed bolt. You can see that the mags have to be modified- rock and lock lugs must be sanded off and the ridges on the side of the mag also sanded down. Notch must be cut in the mag for the mag latch. If you will note, I'm left handed and this is a left
  2. The mags do need to be modified since they are straight insertion and not rock and lock. You can buy them already modified, or do it yourself. Best to buy one for a sample though before you try to modify one yourself. I've bought them from both R and R targets and Speed Shooters International.
  3. I have 3 guns with R and R magwells. I like the straight mag insertion, easy mag insertion on a closed bolt, and the lever type mag release. Here is one of them shown with coupled mags, and an extra large mouth on the magwell (machined by me and added). At first I thought the screws holding the magwell on would eventually strip out -- there's just not much to thread into the recevier, but they have held up fine -- over 3,000 rounds through one of them.
  4. I've put them in two competition guns and like them. You might not notice a big difference if you haven't got the hammer/bolt carrier profile right. But if you've got that right, the next level of smoothness is achieved with this. Got a few thousand rounds with them installed and they've worked and held up fine.
  5. I shoot in 3 gun competition and have given this whole comp thing a lot of attention. In my opinion, the GK-01 gives more recoil reduction. Both reduce recoil, but the sensation is different, I find GK-01 more comfortable and faster to shoot. GK-01 recoil is a rolling motion and my red dot barely moves. The sensation difference was so noticable that I welded up the mid-barrel comp holes in one gun and switched to GK-01. My friends have also switched to GK-01.
  6. I've used both and far prefer the GK-01. Problem is how to use chokes with the GK-01 I don't like the russian choke adapters, they make the gun too long. I 've modified two guns for use with both chokes and the GK-01. In the photo, the right gun is internally threaded for chokes, then the GK-01 was bored out and the then is held on to the barrel by a custom made compression fitting. The left gun uses a Rem choke adapter, I turned down the choke adapter just a bit, then the GK-01 was bored out to match to OD of the choke adapter and is held on by set screws with matching dimples in the
  7. Bought the magazine belt clips from R and R targets. From the above post could be that JT Engineering has them too. Google and R and R Targets and you'll see them on their website for $7 per pair.
  8. For 3 gun I use the belt clips attached to individual mags. Plenty secure for that purpose. I bought mine from R and R. Also consider coupled mags. Arrondondo makes a mag coupler can attach two 12 round together.
  9. PM me. If you bought it from Rifle gear you are probably in So Cal. I am in San Diego and can show you some possible options.
  10. There is a good solution to the GK-01 choke problem. I posted this on another thread but here is more information. My gun is threaded for internal chokes. A collar is machined to precisely fit the barrel OD and held on with red Loctite. It is a light press fit. The factory metal threads are machined out of the GK-01 and the GK-01 ID is then machined to fit the OD of the collar. The GK-01 is held on to the collar by a button head cap screw. I'm left handed and welded up the side vents on the right side of the GK-01 since they are only for a right handed shooter. To change chokes, the GK-0
  11. McMaster Carr is excellent --has most everything. But I've found lower cost source for reamers is KBC tools Part # 5-018-1180 is decimal equivalent of 3mm will run you about $10
  12. Threaded the barrel for internal chokes. Then machined out the existing metal insert in the GK-01. Made a bushing that press fits onto the OD of the barrel and matches the ID of the machined out GK-01. Originally thought it would need clamping action on the barrel, but turned out that it's a close enough press fit that red locktite holds it on fine. The GK-01 slips onto tthe bushing and is held on with a button head machine screw.
  13. From my personal experience I wouldn't recommend the mid-barrel comp. unless you are a serious competition shooter and need to shave of fractions of seconds off your time. Sounds like you've got a great reliable gun now. I shoot 3 gun matches and have S-12s with and without mid-barrel comps. . The only reason to do it in my mind is if you really need BOTH a comp and a choke. I've ended up removing the mid barrel comps from all my guns. My best gun has a GK-01 comp modified to allow internal chokes.
  14. I have a set of unused arrondondo you can have for $40
  15. I have both the mid-barrel comp and the GK-01 Russian comp on different. Both work and reduce the recoil to what I describe as a rolling motion. Your decision really depends a bit on how badly you need chokes. The mid-barrel comp allows you to easily put whatever choke system you want using either the existing external threads --i.e. attach a winchoke adapter or poly choke OR you can internally thread the barrel for chokes. However, a mid-barrel comp is extremely loud and as mentioned above you must shorten the entire gas system for maximum relaibility. The GK-01 uses the stock extrenal t
  16. In my experience, the best material for spacing the front of the follower to reduce tilting is UHMW -- it's self lubricating and comes on a self adhesive roll. It's used for wear strips on conveyors and other friction points on machinery. Cut it to size with scissors. The 0.036" thickness works best. McMaster-Carr has it "Wear-Resistant Slippery UHMW Tape 1" Wide X 5 Yards Long, .036" Thickness" Part Number 76445A772. It about $15 a roll.
  17. You're right, by the time the part gets shipped from Germany it gets expensive. I'm a machinst and will machine another one if can't find one, but I was hoping to avoid the hassle. Still interested in one if anyone has one.
  18. The magazine tricks discussed here influence the the feed angle anbd are helpful. By reducing the feed angle (or reducing the VARIABILITY in the feed angle), you reduce the probabily of a shell getting hung up on the hood. However, in my experience, that usually isn't the total cure. Do the following test -- it will save you a lot of ammo in testing and troubleshooting: 1. Take a screw driver and gently lift a shell and see if it will be captured under the hood, or if it can still slip behind the hood as you have been experiencing. See the attached picture. Notice in the picture that
  19. Gun was an R and R gun from a few years back. Definitely not under warranty anymore.
  20. At a match this weekend my extractor blew out and was lost. We tried everything - even sweeping the area with magnet to try to find it. I know there aren't any parts out there unless one of you has a broken bolt with a good extractor.
  21. I may be able to help you help you. I'm in San Diego. Here's a picture of a recent Cal Legal build.
  22. Great career. Started or ran lots of unusual businesses. Believe it or not, I'm not making this stuff up . . . Now retired, but still run a laser tattoo removal program for ex-gang members and also a medical clinic in the Congo for the pygmies. But in the past -- Owned a dune buggy factory in Abu Dhabi Owned the world's largest carnivorous plant nursery Owned a factory automation company that made conveyors to transport products into clean rooms Did corporate turnarounds -- major car rental company, chemical plants, automation companies Founded a medical device company that in
  23. ACE ARFX stock with 1" thick buttpad. Stock cut down for proper pull length.
  24. As a competitive 3 gun shooter I wanted faster follow up shots. I bought an Enidine stock and put it one one of my guns then compared it side by side with an identical Saiga with a AR FX stock with 1" recoil pad. There was honestly no appreciable difference and my fellow shooters agreed. We all noticed the sensation was slightly different, but not enough to improve the times or significantly reduce the felt recoil.
