  1. Thanks ArcFault! I wonder...why do you see SO many camo'd ARs and bolt guns, but very few AKs??!! This has perplexed me for some time. I'll be camo-ing my Saiga soon. I'd be interested in seeing others' camo'd AK/Saigas/etc. I learned a lot from the AR15 refinishing site. I would consider Multicam to be the holy grail of gun camo. THere is a lot going on with that pattern. To do it right, you've got to not only hand mix colors, but get the pattern consistancy right, and also blend colors. No offense to anyone, but you see a lot of multi-cam jobs that don't have all of those el
  2. 1000 - not to worry, thanks for the effort!!! nalioth - thanks so much for the pics! This is the best response I've gotten yet, lots of great patterns. Finally, some great AK camo jobs. interestingly, a lot of them are Krylon as opposed to the more durable/expensive products like Duracoat etc. Not sure what that says!! I think I've settled on a pattern - a Russian spetnaze camo. Can't wait to paint it and post it. I was intending on getting it done after my multicam projects, but had a couple guys who gave me paying projects - so they take precedence! One was an FAL in Afghan - w
  3. There was another thread on this: http://forum.saiga-12.com/index.php?showtopic=17458 I posted some pics and my load data - 45 Gr Varget, Hornady interlock SP, CCI primers. The pics show a 1.75" 8 shot group. Since then, I've shot a 1.25" 5 shot group with three in the same hole. I think the loads would be better with Fed primers. That load would (If appropriately placed) be a great load for deer or elk. The stock trigger is abysmal. Just installing a good trigger will improve your groups/accuracy. Bad news is that you can't put a new trigger in a S-308 without converting to a p
  4. Why don't you see more camo AKs??!! There are a ton of camo bolt guns and ARs, so why not more camo AKs? I'm getting ready to camo my Saiga .308, would love to see pics of your camo AK for ideas.

  6. I know this isn't a Saiga, but I wanted to show my Saiga peeps! Just finished this project - a Tikka .308 with Leupold Mark 4 LR/T scope in Multicam. Used Duracoat - hand mixed the colors. Next up, a DSA FAL in Afghan camo for a friend, then another friends AK and my Saiga .308 in a camo.. Will post the Saiga pics when I get it done.
  7. Hey! I've heard of this...but I thought it was a desert thing. Don't you guys usually burn a big wooden guy in the desert? i hear that's quite a party!!! By the way, did the scouts get a merit badge??!!
  8. How long is the barrel on that S-12 for sale?
  9. I put this sight on my dustcover, works great. Lines up with the front sight. The only thing I don't like about it is that it doesn't look very....assault rifle-like. williams peep sight
  10. How does it shoot birdshot/buckshot? Is it in the same place roughly or does it pattern around the bullseye?
  11. I pounded the crap out of the trigger pin before I figured out that the spring held it in. I moved the spring and the pin damn near fell out. DUo!!!
  12. That is exactly what I used as well. Works great and looks good too. +1 I did the same on my x39 conversion. Heat hasn't affected it a bit. 1k rounds through it and it looks great. I wonder if I should go ahead and clean it now (Just kidding, I cleaned it after I hit the 1000 round mark ) How does that paint hold up to some of the gun cleaners?
  13. Shit, I'd just be happy with buying a couple 20 rounders somewhere!!!
  14. Depends on what you want. I think Duracoat is a great product, very durable once it cures and no baking. Norrells makes a good product - it requires baking but is cured and tough as hell as soon as it comes out of the oven. If you just want a rattle-can option, some guys have tried the Aluma-hyde II: Brownells Aluma-Hyde II I don't have any experience with it though, so can't offer much input on it.
  15. I missed the MGM Ironman this year, but my team went (the Montana guys!!) and said there were several Saigas there. A couple of FMBG guys shot Saigas, and they shot with the Montanans. I've heard great things about those guys, hopefully they'll be back with us next year. I'll bet there are more Saigas next year. The MGM has to be one of the premier 3 gun matches in the country (note my disclaimer), depending on where you place value. It is a fantastic 3 gun match for Saiga owners as there tend to be some stages with Shotgun round counts in the 20-40 round range. If the Saigas
  16. I'm no expert either, but the Galil is based on the AK and it has a dustcover mounted rear sight. Granted, it is designed a little differently but it shows that it can work. I mounted a rear sight on my dustcover and as of yet do not have a return-to zero problem. I can't say for sure yet - I don't have many rounds through it, and haven't removed the DC much, but so far so good. I do think that if you are after precision sights, either iron or optic, the side mount is the way to go.
  17. Not so much the loads as the mil-spec brass. The thinner commercial brass tends to swell and flow into the flutes which sticks the case in the chamber and rips the base off. On that note the Saiga will eat pretty much anything.

On that note the Saiga will eat pretty much anything. This is all great info! I confess the reason I posted the question was to learn more about the HKs and specifically how they compare to Saigas. Buzz - thanks for the history! Seems like unless you buy a CETME, the other options run $750 and up.
  19. Let the debate begin...(might not be much of a debate on this forum). Which is better, an hk91 clone like the Federal Arms FA91 or a Saiga .308? Why? I'm just wrapping up my Saiga .308 conversion, just need to get the brake installed and paint.
  20. Mounted a Williams peep sight on my S-308 dustcover. Shot 50 rounds, removed dustcover, shot 50 rounds. No significant change in zero. Not much I know, that's all I've got to contribute..
  21. Just got some 168gr. FMJs I ordered from Golden West Brass http://www.goldenwestbrass.com/ They have 2000 bullets for approx $200 + shipping ($12 most places). I say approx $200 because they list it at $190 but their prices have gone up and they haven't updated their website yet. I think they charged me around $200. I weighed about 20 bullets, 12 were between 167.9 and 168.1. 8 were between 167.4 and 167.7. I'll use the ones that are close to 168 in my .308 tikka and the rest in my Saiga for practice ammo. I will shoot 10 or so good ones which I'll shoot a group with in the Sai
  22. There is also some discussion on ammo here: http://forum.saiga-12.com/index.php?showtopic=17458 including some range results from my reloads with 165 gr corelocks.
  23. Unfortunately I tried messing with the screws and it did not change the situation. It looks like the bolt carrier & bolt need to travel about 3/4 of an inch more to hit the back of the gun. OK...so I ground down the trigger and got it to go to the rear of the gun. The gun now performs its minimal function, but a new issue has come up. As the bolt goes to the rear of the gun, after the bolt carrier pushes down the hammer, the bolt face pushes down the hammer just at the end of the stroke. It does not feel too smooth. \ I looked at the bolt and compared it to the bolt in my s
  24. Thanks! Leonard, if you want to go with more of a two-tone - (receiver/barrel in one color, furnature in another) I like either the Black/OD green (similar to the pic you posted) or Black/Khaki or Dark Earth. I've been using Duracoat's Sweedish K for my OD - it's a little darker with a hint of brown. People have really liked it. It is kind of surprising to me that you don't see many camo AKs, as opposed to ARs where camos and/or colors are becoming more and more popular. I wonder why that is? In addition to the photo thread on this site, the AR15.com refinishing site, there
  25. Ha!!! If neither of those work, try light sanding and re-painting. Cover with light coats about 5-10 minutes apart. Make sure you blend in with the surrounding area. Sometimes I'll mix a batch of touch up paint just a tad light on hardner so that it's nice and flat. Better to be a little flat than a little shiny. Don't be afraid to waste a little paint, most of my mixing problems have come when I've tried to mix a very small batch of paint - usually trying not to waste paint and I end up creating a bigger problem. For small batches I use 1 cc syringes to measure out the pa
