  1. For basic specs on the 7N1 sniper ammo here is a URL, www.7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinAmmo030.htm My can is identical in all aspects except date of manufacture, different month.
  2. OK, checked the spam can. As far as I read Cyrillic it is a can of 440 rounds manufactured in 97. It is sniper ammo and as far as I can tell, 7N1 type. I paid $199 and am willing to let it go at my cost plus cost of shipping. I will need to check the cost of shipping by UPS as I doubt that the USPS are willing to handle it. Interested parties can send me a private message and include email if they want a photo of the item. It has been kept in a nice cool dry place, my garage, for the past two years and the can is sealed and in good shape, no rust. The only reason I am offering it is I h
  3. Sorry for the tread hijack, just got long winded. Yes, we need new weapons that are field reliable, easily maintained and with more punch then a glorified .22. I think a gas piston is probably the way to go along with a larger bore, around 7mm. Also the basics of marksmanship need to be re-emphasized, I am sure a lot of failures to stop are due to peripheral hits not into vital zones.
  4. Yup, too much technology, like adding cost to equipment will solve all problems. It would take just one EMP device to short out a divisions electronics and render it useless. I figure since most modern US fighters are fly by wire it would only take one or two suborbital nukes in the upper atmosphere to ground the US Air Force for good. A buddy of mine worked at Kirkland on the EMP hardening research there and in his opinion there is no way to build a Faraday cage big enough to protect a plane sufficiently and keep it flying. Also, the more miniturized a circuit gets the less EMP it takes to
  5. BTW, watch out if using CAA parts in your conversion. They are Israeli made and do NOT count towards US parts count. I would have loved to use the CAA modular AK grip but I went with Tapco due to it being US part for 922R requirements. Same might work for using their butt stocks and adapters.
  6. Would these work on a Saiga .308 without too many mods? I do not want to yank the sight tower and thread the barrel either. I understand that there may be barrel diameter differences, just wnated to check if anyone tried these.
  7. OK gunnysmith, I see you did what I did and went a bit further, heheh. Your pictures are probably better then mine too. I did not see your material posted until know, probably my bad for not searching well enough. Yes, this is what I did except for the spring and disconnector surfaces. THe end result is a very positive and safe sear engagement that will not slip and returns to full sear engagement the moment pressure on the trigger is relieved. Trigger movement is quite smooth too. I will let you pictures do the talking as far as what need to be done.
  8. If you like squeezing a marshmallow. +1 on the CZ's, great gun, great heavy feel, and not too spendy. I never found my XDs to feel like marshmellows, but I ahve lots of roudns through them and they are quite worn in.
  9. If you want I have a sealed can of genuine Russian 7N1 7.62x54R sniper ammo. The Cyrillics on it do say the word sniper on the can. It is most likely corrosive and steel tipped too. Picked it up when I got my Romak PSL, kept the ammo got rid of the PSL as it was never accurate enough for my tastes. Was thinking of using the ammo in a M91/30 Mosin-Nagant sniper project I have been working on but would be happy to part with it for a price. I also have some Hungarian yellow silver coded steel cored heavy ball ammo in that caliber.
  10. As everyone know the G2 trigger group from Tapco has a safety issue in the Saiga .308. When the safety is on it is possible to move the trigger to a point that the weapon will fire or will act as a set trigger as soon as the safety is disengaged. I had this occur to my rifle during my conversion. The general solution is to add material to the safety tab. There is, however, another issue where dealing with the sear geometries of the G2 system, at least on the one hook like I have. The camber on the trigger hooks needs to be cut to be more positive, in layman's terms, more hook shaped. This ca
  11. Damn Americans, screw up the arms race for everyone, lol. Just kidding. I do however wonder if most the guys at the DOD and such were endowment challenged due to them always pushing for big powerful rounds until the 60s. WWII proved the advantage of the intermediate round for battle. The Soviets figured this out based on experiences with the Germans. Why did the US push the 7.62x51? I know it was McNamara and a few "fixed"reports that got the M-16 fielded, I do however wonder why it has held on so long. There must have been plenty of anecdotal evidence as to it's ineffectiveness before th
  12. It's just the clamping (bottom) portion of the mount. It should just swap with the clamping mechanism that's already there. Larry Yeah, that is what I understood it to be. Does it raise the scope any higher off the top of the receiver? Is it the AK mount? And does it slide on from the front or the back? My SVD mount slides on from the front. My problem is I cant get my scope to clear the receiver from the front. Those 8x42 scopes are huge. I think the rail placement on the Saiga is a bit lower then that on the Romak PSL.
  13. Another update. I tried fitting my hammer after installing the trigger guide. To install teh trigger guard I used 8-32 x1/4" black button head screws with Allen wrench pattern. I fitted them so the nuts would be inside the receiver and the button head would be on the outside for aesthetic reasons. The problem is tht hte hammer now drags on the nut under the front of the trigger guard. Luckily the hammer is such a massive piece that I can grind down the are where it rubs without affecting reliability/structure. None of the fire control surfaces are involved so I am not worried about the fix
  14. Actually high volume shooters reload 9mm all the time, if only to tune it to their guns. When you go through 30K+ rounds of 9mm/year it pays to save where you can. I am still not sure the Winchester ammo in question was reloaded. I have seen Winchester factory new ammo with different primers and bullets depending on batch they came from. Marks on the outside of the case could also come from dirty/worn commercial dies used in the factory. IF it shoots straight and goes bang everytime I would not really worry about it. If you are suspicious of the quality and what it may do to your gun give
  15. Which adapter is that? I have a 8x42 POSP on SVD mount that I can't get to fit. maybe the adapter would help. Please advise, I can t see it on the Kalinka website.
  16. I have the best of both worlds, a CZ-83 & CZ-82, both chambered in 9x18 Mak. One guy out of Atlanta sells the CZ-83 in 9 Mak on gunbroker.com.
  17. XD is not DAO. It is a SA type action. The striker gets cocked when you chamber a round and never decocks. THE gun is kept safe by grip safety, trigger safety and a firing pin block. No safety issues, as simple to use as a Glock but with better ergonomics and a much better trigger. Take a look at it but the final choice is of course yours. You might also look at CZ, great guns at a great price. I have two SP01S and love them.
  18. Great. I think you will find it a great gun. Welcome.
  19. Anyone ever use the Rust-O-Leum SURE-GRIP finish on their furniture? It is supposed to create a rubber finish like Hogue grips I think. Just curious if anyone ever tried it and what their results were.
  20. Did a second coat of the Rust-O-Leum High tempreature paint today. Looks real good. Now to let the gun cure for a while. Tomorrow I start reassembly. While waiting for the paint to dry I started workign on the handguard. Decided to cut down the top front and a gentle angle and add cooling vents. Used masking tape to do a lay out and started slow with small bits and working up to larger and larger to a max of 3/8". Cut between the drilled holes with a Dremel and cut off wheel. Due to the high speed of the Dremel ( I used the lowest setting) the nylon got melted a bit. I ended up doi
  21. I am new to Saigas myself and I am in the middle of a conversion as this will also be my "poor mans M1A". I highly recommend it as it lets you trick out your rifle to your desires and being able to use 20 round US made mags just makes it better. The conversion is real easy and many people here will be happy to aid you through any trouble spots. GO for it.
  22. My POSP 8x42 will NOT mount on my Saiga's rail due to the fact that the rear sight comes into contact and interferes. I have my scope on a SVD type mount, from the Romak PSL I used to have, and it mounts from the front of the rifle. Depending on your mount, yours may fit. There are other mounts, meant for the AK, that mount from the back. I have no way of knowing about yours without seeing the scope/mount assembly.
  23. Look at a Springfield XD too, they are excellent guns. MyXD-9 has about 40K rounds without a hickup. It has gone multiple K rounds of intensive training over a period of several days without the need for any cleaning too. I tend to clean my gun after every range session but it is nice to know it will function without.
  24. Clarification, the above mentioned product is boxed as Winchester, has a Winchester head stamp and red primer sealant on primer. It is Czech made S&B ammo, made for Winchester under contract.
  25. Winchester has been contracting S&B ammo with their label and headstamp on the product. If you read the small print on the original box it should say made in the Czech Republic. It should not matter, S&B is still a very good label, probably better them most the domestic stuff anyway. I think it has been downloaded to US standards too, European loadings tend to be hotter then US. I have shot some of the Czech made Winchester brand and it has been very reliable and consistent.
