polinidad 0
After shooting my saiga 7.62 today for the first time, I brought it home to clean and about burned my eyes out. Tha gas tube smelled like amonia. What is this. I'm new to this game.
pistonring8 1
Thats a new one on me. You say its brand new? perhaps whatever they put in there to protect the metal was all burned up and stinky. Did the smell go away after you cleaned it?
Doerdie 0
Did you cat pee next to your cleaning bench ? Seriously, I have never smelled anything but burnt powder. What ammo were you using?
JWysenski762 0
is it a sulpher smell?
polinidad 0
I'm using wolf fmj. the smell went away after cleaning. I did clean it before I shot it, maybe I left some cleaning solution in there. Not really a sulfer smell. I do alot of modern firearm shooting and it does not smell like this did. Doerdie 0
I wonder what burnt Hoppes #9 smells like. Maybe thats it. I shoot Wolf, never get any odors.
Eric86GT 0
I've shot mostly Wolf through my 7.62x39 and it wasn't until the last couple times I shot it that I got the ammonia smell. Must be some batches of Wolf that do smell.
k_dawg 0
I notice that the wolf in the ammo cans I get, smells like cat piss/amonia..
Wolverine 10,360
Maybe the Russians are pissing on it before it is shipped for the heck of it. And yes, I shoot the Wolf FMJ & JHP stuff. Put 200+ rounds through the converted Saiga today. Not a single hiccup. Best of all it never pissed ammonia once.
KySoldier 2
Sulfer smell occurs occasionally, I assume its do to the mixture of the gunpowder. Matbe what you're smelling is the sealant? Edited February 1, 2005 by KySoldier
IndyArms 10,186
no... its really LIKE an ammonia smell... I have had it with the wolf 7.62 ammo that I have shot in my AK..... just figured it was the primers, myself.... or some byproduct of the cleaning solution residue, mixed with the heat from the powder ignition in the rifle... dunno... but it *IS* ammonia-like... hugegator 0
Seems like some batches of Wolf are worse than others. The batch I shot on Saturday smelt like month old cat box.
IndyArms 10,186
QUIT IT!!!! you are making me hungry!!!!!
SaigaMan7.62 0
its Russian surplus just named Wolf Hollow points and mine smells the same way. Its either the ammo or the hoppes 9 but it is normal. It may be the ammo burning up the solvent, but either way it happens and you get that cat pee smell. Or maybe its the laquer on the bullets Im not sure we discussed this on a few forums back. Its pretty commen with wolf.
Integratedj 1
Wolf always faintly smells of ammonia. Some lots more so than others. the .223 is the strongest on average. It is the cat piss round. Keep shooting, you will be fine. IJ

glennb 0
Yup, gotta agree with most here that most of the Wolf I have shot smells like ammonia. The best part is it gets dumped right in your face when it oozes from under the dust cover.
