swells08 128
I have seen a couple of places charging 6-8 they do all sorts of polishing and fine tuning from som,e of the info I have seen, but it seems to be an area to make money.
IndyArms 10,186
they do all sorts of polishing and fine tuning and some of the time they DONT...
csspecs 1,987
Without a break down on what they are doing for 600.00 its hard to say if its a screwing or not. If they are installing a G2 trigger and putting on a tapco stock and pistol grip and a little touch up paint then I'd say they are dreaming.
chevymann 13
Really depends on the itemized list of parts and services to be fair. If they are providing quality parts, filling the holes and refinishing, custom work, etc., it may not be a bad deal. If it's a cheapo kitchen table job, then that's rediculous. I do my own, but I respect the ammount of time/experience involved in a quality conversion. Just my .02 cents.
Reverendfranz 160
A good Tromix conversion (g3 sights, folding stock, all new furniture, cut and threaded barrel, muzzle attachment...) runs about 850 now, IIRC, and is a steal. Like its been pointed out, it really depends on what is being done, and how well its being done. Its always nice to do work yourself, but it does take time, effort and tools, and sometimes, paying a reputable smith money is the only way you are going to get it done, fast, and done right. Done, Fast, And Right, all come with a price tag.
kresk 10,063
I recently surveyed about a half dozen enterprises that do conversions, some of which are here on the forum, and the average price was $449. The lowest was about $350 and no basic conversion was over $500.
N4KVE 14
I paid $140 to have the complete conversion done by a smith who has built hundreds of AK's. Small shop, 2 month wait etc. The price included US pistol grip & buttstock, & FSE FCG. Gun looks great & shoots awesome. He's on the west coast of Florida. Ruffian72 548
Parts alone were $600 for last project + weapon. Figure total refinish, machinery needed. Don't have equipment, or time. Know what my time cost someone, so I was satisfied. Have Fn Fals I built, or restored vehicles, that if I figured my time for quality/specifics wanted it would be damn costly. Done kitchen table conversion myself, and farmed out lathe/ refinish work. So, like most, know time it takes and gunsmith shop rate. So, if not a basic job, I'll pay for a quality builder, who backs their product.
silleywilley 0
damn that's crazy expensive!! My conversion with plum kvar kit, posp, and all compliance parts was only $375ish... did it myself, as I am too picky to let someone else do it. buy a dremel and give it a shot, it's easy Edited March 11, 2010 by silley
Rhodes1968 1,638
I gotta agree it depends on what kind of build they are doing, surely this cant be for a simple conversion otherwise we are all in the wrong business.
DrGonZo 157
I did my 308 conversion myself and am happy for the learning experience. My rifle looks and functions great, and I didnt break the bank to get it to its current state. Do it yourself. You'll be happy you did. If you have any questions, they will most likely be pre-answered on this site.
