Conscript 99
I've got a Ontario shiv. While it's a knife it's a sweet knife. I've made a pocket sheath from kydex that has a hook on it I've tied some paracord to the knife the para hangs out of my pocket and when I pull it the hook on the sheath catches on the pocket and I get the knife in hand. What I'm trying to say is ontario makes good blades. I was going to ask about the tramontina. Here is 5 of those for a near 37.99! http://www.machetespecialists.com/trma5pa.html The reason I mentioned Tramontina, is it's a work machete. It's not cool looking, it's not custom, but as a former surveyor I used them every day. I've had condors, I've had ontarios, and I've had no-name hardware store machetes, I've had tacticool cold steel (lasted about 2 days). But the brass tacks are, for me, I still own that 18" wood handled Tramontina. It still does it's job, everything else had broken or not lived up to my expectations. Your mileage may vary however. They're made in Brazil, there's a lot of jungle down there if ya catch my drift.
Squishy 1,149
By the way max im a surveyor, so i have a bit of experience with machetes. Plus if you go camping the last thing you want is a deep laceration with miles to hike out. I did this kind of work once upon a time and I became fairly proficient with a bush axe. Seems like the ones made of a single piece of steel aren't easy to find now. Oops, found one; $70...a tad pricey.
Sdustin 578
I remember clearing camping apostles with my grandpas bush axe. I hated that thing it was big, maybe I was smaller. And heavy buy made short work of brush. I'm high jacking this thread and turning it into a general knife thread. Haha. So what's the price like on the Zombie tools? Cobra 76 two 2,677
I will only use a full tang mechete (blade through handle). Hard to go wrong with Cold Steel or Ontario. Not machetes here but good zombie killers...lol. P9090047.JPG Nice lookin' Kukarhis, Cobra! The one on the left to me looks like the one Denzel had in Book of Eli, if I remember right. I think that one Denzel had in that movie was a Kukri. The blade on the right is def. one of those. Wow holy crap! Get a bunch of gun lovers talkin blades and shit blows right up...lol. Just got back here and had to read for a while to catch up! Yep you guys have sharp eyes too huh? I didn't even see Book Of Eli until recently, and when I first saw his Kukri I had to freeze frame the DVD and go grab my blade off the wall in my office. It does look very similar. I picked that up a few years ago at a gun show SUPER CHEAP, but it's a very well made knife with a pretty good hollow ground edge actually. Well worth more than I paid for it IMO. Whoa now this is crazy! I did a google search for "Hero's Edge", which is the name printed on the blade of my "Eli" knife...on the left side you can't see.... and saw a link to Book Of Eli, and found this interesting thread where someone else got the same knife I have (also from a gun show for CHEAP), and he too thought it might be the same when the movie came out and he saw it. http://www.zombiehunters.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=52305&start=24 Apparently his was a Coleman brand... So then shit got even more crazy! One of the links someone else posted in that thread takes you to this! Wow small world.....lol. http://www.amazon.com/Curved-Machete-Sheath-Tactical-Military/dp/B000RB7DCU/ref=pd_sbs_sg_41 Mine like that was a gift from a buddy about ten yrs ago because he knows what a cobra nut I am. Coolness though! From that thread I also got this link to what looks like my next Kukri! Saweeet! http://www.amazon.com/Tomahawk-Black-Warrior-Kukri-Machete/dp/B002IKI1KQ/ref=pd_sbs_sg_35

You wont find one for uner 280.00 generally. Unless you know a guy thats willing to part with one for cheap. Well worth it IMO. Pics dont do them justice. You didnt jack the thread bro. thebuns1 4,323
I love recurved blades. lol. Thanks for sharing the links Shannon. Interesting shit my friend. And yes, we do have some sharp eyes!!! I do especially for blades. lol. Its funny how this happens on a gun forum. You'd think this thread was at the blade forums. lol.
devildogdakota 804
Damn Cobra, that Tomahawk Black Warrior Kukri Machete is a force to be recogned with. It would be nice to "slice and dice" the zombies around corners with that angle! That baby would definately amplify the striking blows the way it's designed. devildogdakota 804
I second the Zombie Tools! They are made just a couple of miles from where I am right now!! Great products and great Fellas as well! My Backwoods Machete has to be around 1/4" thick steel and is Full Tang. The nice heavy weight gives a real solid swing, great for getting firewood while camping. I had the ZT fellas make me an extra sheath for each of my Zombie Tools so I could mount them in my vehicles. Machete in the 4runner and my De'Capitain in the VW bus.0zt4r.jpg 0ztb.jpg 0ztm.jpg 0ztvw.jpg Great set up on that door mount, Rob! I thought I was the only redneck in these parts that used combat fighting tools on their deer! I used my Trailmaster bowie a few years ago on two deer I shot back to back.
LuPiN8oR 333
I still stand by ontarios. Tough as nails and sharpened by a bastard file. No need to baby them at all. But the zombie blades do look real nice...

It's still attached to the TV show pretty hard right now so I wouldn't expect that to drop much. Despite the comments about Gerber in this thread, I still want that set. LuPiN8oR 333
Do yourself a favor max and red locktite the bolts holding the blade to the handle on that gerber machete. At least then the entire blade 'might' not come off. Just chunks. You seem like a nice guy dont want good people getting hurt. If you dont plan on using it much you might be ok. Just look at some reviews of em on amazon.

gunfun 3,931
Recent post got me thinking about these. I bought a cheap Voodoo Tactical shotgun scabbard, and it came with an 18" machete. Since the scabbard came with a place to hold the machete, I would like to replace it with a high quality one. The scabbard is really not bad for the cheap price. The machete is bad! lol. Any sources? How about you get some leather and some of these: http://www.tandyleatherfactory.com/en-usd/product/copper-rivets-burrs-11280-006.aspx They make leather work look good and are fast and easy. All you need is a hammer an anvil and a pair of dykes. It also helps to make a metal block with a hole slightly longer than the post so that you can use it to hammer the washer down snugly. Simply pound that washer down and trim off the post with about 1/8" sticking up and hit it 2-3 clean blows with a ball peen. If I can, I always try to get the long ones, because you can always cut them off shorter, and I like to work with heavy leather. If you get a mixed pack you always end up with a bunch that are too short to use. There is a huge difference between an average machete and a great one. I was very happy to be able to pick up some good ones in guatemala a couple years ago. Sadly only a couple of them fit in my bag. The ones I have been happiest with are not overly expensive either. They are made in germany, and the brand is Coroneta the logo is a little trumpet. When I saw that a guy who goes by coronet posted this topic, I was sure you loved them too. gunfun 3,931
I also like gerber products, but not their machete or their leatherman. I hadn't heard of the failures. The thing about a good machete is that it can look identical to a lame one or a terrible one. It's all down to the right springiness, center of balance, center of percussion and springiness. The metal should be tough rather than brittle. You will know the difference the first time you hit something with one. A good one puts all the energy into the target when you hit and has a fairly broad sweet spot (C.O.P.) A crummy one feels leaden or transmits the shock back into your wrist like hitting a baseball with the wrong part of the bat. I've seen lots of fancy things like that zombie kukri and most of them looked cool but were too heavy and didn't cut well. A good kukri is kinda the same way. I thought they all sucked until I tried my friend's antique one. As a rule the good ones are very light and kind of have a hollow grind to them. I like a machete that just drags the gound when held. That is about right for clearing trees fast. (I used to get paid to clear slopes of alder as a kid.) Edited March 30, 2013 by GunFun
Sdustin 578
I'd like to obtain one of these zombie tools but I just cant spend that much anytime soon. I'm thinking of making something like one of their small swords from an old leaf spring.

Conscript 99
So is there any one else that thinks five tramontina machetes for 40 bucks is a good deal? I'm not a big fan of their plastic handled ones, this one is my favorite: http://www.baryonyxknife.com/bumagr.html $10.50, that's an awesome little knife co. too. Family owned, great service, same day shipping if you order in the morning even if you choose the "special option" where they do some custom work to it. I just got the Ontario's I ordered and I'm sure glad this thread came up. I'm no machete expert, but this one seems extremely solid. Especially compared to the $10 POS's you always find at guns shows and such. I feel like I could actually use this one. Now I just need to go out and find someone something to try it on. Plus if you go camping the last thing you want is a deep laceration with miles to hike out. Honestly, I don't know much of shit about machetes. I'm seriously asking the question of what you expect to happen when using a high quality piece vs. a low quality piece. Personally... I think the Gerber zombie survival set looks awesome! The bill hook particularly peaks my interest. http://www.gerbergear.com/Apocalypse/Gear/Apocalypse-Kit_30-000601 using shitty metal stuff (didn't know any better at the time) that we took the edge off for a stage production once, had it snap in half and the blade still went into the persons foot, so ya take that with a grain of salt There's a place called Army-Navy Surplus in Marietta (not to be confused with Hodge that deals mostly in schlock) that sells GOOD machetes that are surplus, just have to get the edge back. They are super cheap also Edited April 12, 2013 by Syndicate
LuPiN8oR 333
Get some grip tape to wrap the handles with, really helps control the blade. Agreed syndicate, ive seen more than a couple blades snap under even light use. Its all fun and games (or work) until someone gets opened up lol.
