  1. I used the black laminate Timbersmith on my Norinco. I had to remove quite a bit of the lower handguards interior to get it to fit on the larger chinese barrel, I can only guess at the additional material requiring removal for the 308 to fit, but id guess its probably close to 1/4 an inch. Refer to this thread (http://forum.saiga-12.com/index.php?/topic/26419-list-of-reference-dimensions-for-ak-barrels-and-their-components/) may help you with understanding the amounts required. I think the Timbersmith set is measured for a Romanian sized barrel. In regards to the trigger, if you are handy enou
  2. It's all fun and games til someone forgets that old elementary school song "Sticks and stones may break my bones......" Although, in this situation, probably should have a gun thrown into that song somewhere.....
  3. Replace your stock, trigger group and buy CSSpecs mags and then you will be set. He is also planning (according to his forum) to begin making replacement compliance parts for the factory mag. You can also go with handguards and gas piston if you want to be REALLY safe. As has been stated, make sure you are REPLACING and not adding parts. Pistol grips werent on there so they wont help you replace, neither will a new muzzle device. The links in this thread (http://forum.saiga-12.com/index.php?/topic/32197-922-r-compliance-automatic-checklist/) stickied by Indy can really help you a lot if you ge
  4. Freshly updated with my 10 round/ 20 round length CSSpecs mag and surplus AK-74 dust cover
  5. I was looking at this yesterday. CSSpecs is now offering to ship as a repair kit, in pieces. SO you can get a 20 rounder in CA and have to manually convert to a 10 round on your own. I have thought about doing this myself, since in MA we cant get Saiga mags over 10 and them 20 rounders just look right in there. http://stores.csspecs.com/-strse-5/saiga-308-metal-magazine/Detail.bok standard 20 rounder with rebuild kit option selectable. Beautiful option I'm glad he has added. I may buy another 2 mags just because of that being available now.
  6. I removed the FCG from my MAK but kept the Chinese hammer. There is literally no difference doing it that way. I did notice the G2 hammer was nowhere near as good. I've put something like ~500 through the combo USA/China group and it has worked everywhere as good as the original did before I converted it from thumbhole stock. I cant buy many types of mags due to legalities, so if I want to run surplus, it requires at least a few FCG parts (unless I want to start doing gas pistons and the what-nots). Eventually when I can collect enough parts to convert all my mags with additional compliance pa
  7. Just be sure to stay away from the factory magazine. In that configuration you will only be compliant with 922r using US made mags
  8. Any standard AK safety lever will work. The Saiga lever is too short, if you have any welding skills you could add the additional metal, or add bumps to the rear of the trigger where the safety engages. I just purchased a NOS Chinese safety and painted it to match, works fine.
  9. It does. Rather than having to push up on it now, I can also force it backwards with my finger and it slides it up. So I get bi-directional activation now. Slide back or push up and no rub on trigger finger, I'll take it
  10. I cant buy them in my state, but I can provide you with their site link (http://uintaindustries.com/) and assume theyre still making them. Can't compare to Surefires as I cant get a similar version of those either. Csspecs makes some damn good mags though
  11. Hey everyone, I am pretty new to the forums. Stalked for a while before I went through and picked up my Saiga. I've searched around for a long time and read a lot of threads about conversions and issues. One issue I noticed when I was converting, was the bolt hold open and how people had such a hard time with it. I'm not going to go into how much of a pain it is to get it reinstalled, but another thing I noticed was people wanting to eliminate it due to it hitting their fingers while firing. So I just thought I'd post up what I did, and maybe some others who have done something similar can sh
  12. I'd fill the area with something if I were going to do that. I know it isnt very likely, but I'd hate to have the trigger slide off the hammer or some other accident that could potentially happen and make the gun erratic and unsafe. Always go by "better safe than sorry" when a firearm is involved
  13. Standard Saiga 308 safety is not long enough. Requires either adding metal to the standard safety, adding bumps to the trigger where it meets the safety, or buying a brand new safety. I purchased a NOS Chinese safety, colored it to match and installed. Now it feels and acts like a standard AK safety. Choose whichever you feel most comfortable or whichever suits your budget. Just make sure its safe, wouldnt want any issues with discharges because of the safety issue.
  14. I found the easiest thing for getting the BHO was to go floss, set everything else up, insert pin up against BHO hole, then pull floss and pray. I can now rip it out and get it back in within a few seconds using this method. Looks great though
  15. I'd say go Saiga, convert and restock with a Draganov style stock (for better trigger options after conversion), get some 5 rounders for hunting and some hi-caps for practice/fun. You wont worry about 922r with a rear stock and trigger group swap and any mags you get will likely be American made anyways, so that solves any legality issues. Then you still save over any semi 308 AR guns and have the quick follow-up shots a bolt wont allow.
  16. +1, this is what I went with on mine. Followed with this (http://www.k-var.com...89&cat=0&page=2) and this (http://www.k-var.com...productid=16383). Meets 922 compliance with Bulgy parts as long as you dont use a foreign muzzle device if you end up going full conversion. If you buy csspecs or other US made mags you are even more in the clear, as those add another 3 US parts. I wont knock tapco stocks, as I have their set on my Norinco and it has held up very well to hundreds of rounds. I dont know how well it would handle the 308 and dont think I want to find out though. If you want wo
  17. I don't own, but my opinion is anything that removes my option to use irons isn't worthwhile. Just a quick search on kalinka (http://kalinkaoptics...ak-1-2-slr.html) gives many more options for a rail-mounted picatinny which will allow you to also use irons when required, for just slightly more $$. Thatd be my choice
  18. I'll advise for the csspecs mags. I got mine in the mail today and they function flawlessly and look sweet. I love a steel mag for an AK over a poly. Just looks right for it. The csspecs mags are a lil more expensive but they look and feel well worth the price.
  19. I know .308 has the advantage in all aspects of ballistics in this matchup, but I'd personally go with the x39. Any well placed shot, in self defense or against an animal (possible for SD against a hog, too), should be fine for both. I dont see a defense situation at more than 100yards, unless you have issues with roaming snipers in the area. So, to me, it doesnt sound like the extra ballistics and energy are a huge requirement. Maybe if you are going to be in the more heavily wooded parts the .308 would be the only choice but if switching back and forth between the two, hit up the x39. You co
  20. Heres my Saiga with the ol' Norinco on top
  21. With $170 that you pay for the ATI, you can have a converted gun that takes any number of different stock options. You would also have a much better trigger than that factory POS. You may have to do a little more work to get it, but it really isn't all that hard at all. I had mine converted in about 2 hours with a Dremel. I know you're saying unconverted, but the pros to converting just take the cake in this arguement. Cost would probably be cheaper, depending on which stock options you chose, as well.
  22. Where I am we cant put a pistol grip on a shotgun thats mag fed, so I got the 308 first and plan to get the 12 in the future. Maybe by then we will be able to convert the 12 too
  23. wish we didnt have this stupid assault weapons ban in massachusetts. hate having to spend eighty to get twenty rounds worth. not that there is much choice, once the tax man rolls around i will be getting a few
  24. These look great. Think I found my source for 308 mags now.
