  1. The number of US made parts isn't what counts, it's the number of listed foreign parts. 10 or fewer listed foreign parts is the goal. For example, adding a US made pistol grip doesn't count towards compliance, as the Saiga comes with no pistol grip - no listed foreign part is replaced. On the other hand, adding a foreign pistol grip would actually make it farther from compliance - adding another listed foreign part.
  2. The charging handle hits the butt pad. I tried it on a Saiga .308, and a Hungarian AK and it did it on both.
  3. http://thegunwiki.com/Gunwiki/BuildSaigaVerifyCompliance It seems if you use a US made FCG you'd be in compliance, as long as any brake or flash hider is also US made, and any magazine you use contains at least one listed US part. You could also (in addition to the US made FCG) replace the gas piston with a US made one and be in compliance with any magazine.
  4. I had a few feeding problems with the one 25 rounder I had. Since cutting it down to a 20, it's been perfect. All the others I have are 20's, and they feed perfectly. FWIW, it's also a lot easier to get mag pouches that fit the 20 rounder.
  5. The FCG must be modified to work with the safety on the .308. Or, the .308 safety can be replaced with a standand AK safety.
  6. Interested in seeing what you come up with (and if it can be done w/o major alterations to the rifle).
  7. ^^ Ammoman = 18.9 cents per round ^^ In Store: Walmart has CCI Blazer Brass for $8.97 per 50, or 17.9 cents per round Academy Sports has Blue Box Monarch for $8.99 per 50, or 18 cents per round Dick's Sporting Goods has Remington UMC for $89.90 per 500, or 18 cents per round Online: Ammunition To Go has Brown Bear for $182.57 per 1000 shipped ($159.95+$22.62 s/h), or 18.3 cents per round http://www.ammunitiontogo.com/catalog1/pro...me=9mm-fmj-ammo ^^ sportsmansguide.com = 22.5 cents per round ^^ I can't find any for less that that. ^^ aimsurplus.com = 36.2
  8. Ammunition To Go also has the Golden Bear (brass plated steel case) buck shot (if you want to try that): http://www.ammunitiontogo.com/catalog1/pro...ar-3-4-buckshot
  9. Yes, a standard AK piston will work in the .308. You can make your own floorplates. As to followers, Surefires work in the FBMG and Russian mags, but I don't think Surefire will sell them separately. AFAIK, (except for Thermolds) G3 magazines are foreign made - no 922r help there. I also don't think the AR-10 conversion would be that cost effective (unless you already have an AR-10 and want to use the same mags for both). YMMV.
  10. Do share :big'allears': So far this thread has yet to produce one single actual 'reason' why these stocks 'suck'. If I made a titanium stock and sold it for $500 would you be happy? The Tapco is 'as advertised'. They don't say it's made of gold, and it ain't made of gold. What exactly is a 'bad experience'? Is that when you get a bruise from recoil after a long day of shooting? I've not had one break, and they seem solid enough. If I have one complaint (admittedly a minor one), it's the way they fold up. I realize it's not a good idea to fire the rifle with the s
  11. IMHO, the trigger group conversion will give you the biggest improvement. This will also require adding a pistol grip and buttstock. I really recommend Dinzag for the parts. They cost a bit more than just buying the Tapco parts, but all the needed modifications have been done (and very professionally). Saiga 308 & 30-06 FCGPGC3 http://www.dinzagarms.com/misc_parts/fcg.html Since you want a folding stock, Sprotsman's Guide has one on sale for $19.97. It's tan, but a bit of Krylon Fusion paint can correct that. http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.a...489539&pn=1
  12. If you're using Internet Explorer, you might want to consider installing a more secure browser. It would not only help with viewing Dinzag's site, but would leave you far less vulnerable to spyware and viruses. Some alternatives to IE: Opera - http://www.opera.com/ Firefox - http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/ Mozilla Suite (SeaMonkey - contains browser, email, and web page editor) - http://www.seamonkey-project.org/
  13. You'd be O.K. when using Surefires, as they count as replacing 3 parts which (when added to the two you'd already have replaced) would bring you to 9 listed foreign parts = in compliance. Using current production FBMG mags (which only replace one listed foreign part) would bring you to 11 listed foreign parts = not in compliance. So, if you want to use FBMg magazines (and comply with 922r) you'd need to replace one more listed part. In that case, I'd suggest replacing the gas piston.
  14. If you're set on Wolf ($389.97 per 1000): http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=282659 Cheaper (and IMHO as good or better) - Brown Bear ($167.95 per 500): http://www.ammunitiontogo.com/catalog1/pro...ll-308-762-nato
  15. A bit of information on Wolf ammo in an AR: http://www.theboxotruth.com/docs/edu18.htm
  16. I bought two about a year ago, I'd rate them as like-new.
  17. Numrich still has Galils (used - $12.10 for quantities of 5 or more, or new - $22.00 for quantities of 5 or more) http://www.e-gunparts.com/DisplayAd.asp?ch...perSKU=&MC=
  18. That should do it. Plus, if you use US made magazines will lower the parts count even more (Surefires by 3, newer FBMG's by one, and older FBMG's by two).
  19. It might be easier to sell if the conversion were complete. Then again, there are those that would prefer it as it is (so they could add the stock they prefer). It really depends where you intend to list it. If selling it at a show, a gun shop, or a site like Gunbroker, I'd go ahead and finish the conversion. If you intend to sell it here, you might want to try selling it as is before you invest in a stock.
  20. i had the same question awhile back and did a search and found a letter from the ATF stating that it only counts as one part. I know it defies common sense, but that shouldn't suprise you. I could be because you are only replacing one listed foreign part (buttstock) with a US made part. Since most Saiga's do not come with a pistol grip, there is no listed foreign part to replace (you are adding an additional part). As the idea is to reduce the number of listed foreign parts, adding a US made part that does not replace a listed foreign part would not contribute to 922r compliance.
  21. Are you sure that they were Promags? The videos like that I've seen were Magpul PMags, not Promags (PMags are much better magazines than Promags, but only made for AR's - at least so far).
  22. It depends on the magazine. The Surefire is three (body, follower, floorplate). The FMBG is either two (body and floorplate) or one (body) depending on when it was made (the first FMBG's had two, current ones have only one compliant part). Replacing the gas piston is the easiest and cheapest (but you'll be limited to Surefire magazines). Dinzag also sells a FCG for non-PG converted Saiga that takes care of two compliance parts if you want to stick to factory appearance (when combined with gas piston replacement, it would allow the use of FMBG magazines without 922r issues).
  23. Looks like they do now (though I've yet to find one for sale). http://www.thermoldproducts.com/products.html
