BobAsh 582
Tony told me he could make it work- the MG-42 uses a rimmed cartridge.
Rustynuts 3
Yep, that's the pic!
quinci956 1
I want one. Then I'm going to get one of those Ass Hat auto conversions and cut the barrel down to about 5 inches just to see how much of the alphabet I can get to come to my house for a visit. russm4a3 5
Tony told me he could make it work- the MG-42 uses a rimmed cartridge. What would he charge for a conversion like that?
BobAsh 582
I recall he worked out a price, but can't remrmber what it was. Tony's business is feast or famine; right now it's "feast", so one-offs won't be happening for awhile. You never know, though...
russm4a3 5
Maybe when he gets to me in 2009 #300 something on the list he will be willing to give mine a go.....
BobAsh 582
The problem is, there is a ton of R&D involved. It would be hellishly expensive.
MikeD 541
The problem is, there is a ton of R&D involved. It would be hellishly expensive. Yep, it wouldn't be worked out in a day that is for sure. I was asking Tony about this awhile back and he estimated he would need $100,000 to cover time, material.... to get it figured out. Hey, maybe someone would get lucky and it only take Tony half of what he thought. It sure would be sweet though!

loki0629 55
Isn't that just a bandoleer fed through the mag hole? Funny as hell though. I might do that and send it off to my gun buddies. On second thought, belay that last. They might keep passing it around and eventually the alphabet guys will drop by MY house.
BobAsh 582
Isn't that just a bandoleer fed through the mag hole? Yeah, that's all it is. Pretty funny though.

BobAsh 582
It worked too! Everybody was completely freaked out about it.
BattleRifleG3 16
$100k is really not all that bad when you think about it. The second one would take about 1/3 what the first did, and retrospective redesign for manufacturing would take a little more off by the 5th one or so. For systematized small scale production (approx 30 units per year) I would pull the $10k each number out of my ear. Which is about what pre-'86 registered AKs and ARs go for. I would imagine military full auto and civilian semi-auto would cost about the same.

I'd guess that if one was 100K, that 10 might be a bargain and possibly only cost 120K (most of the expense will be development.) In fact, if you could find someone who wanted to create one, there are some creative pricing ideas that could keep it tame cost wise. Question is .... How many could be made before they are declaried DD's
BattleRifleG3 16
Development expense would be a big part of it, but still the manufacturing cost per item would be up there. I don't think it could stabilize under $10k, or maybe 7-8k at the very least. In other words, Barrett prices. Would probably have a comparably sized customer base. drooling idiot 1
Tony told me he could make it work- the MG-42 uses a rimmed cartridge. No rim on MG42, the ammo is standard german 8MM with push through feeding belts. there are beltfeeds that use rimmed cartridges though. the way to make it happen would be to get 5-10 buyers. Twinsen 86
The MG-42 uses rimless 8mm Mauser. The PKM however, uses rimmed Russian 7.62x54. There are probably a few British belt feds that used Rimmed .303 Brit ammo as well.
TonyRumore 1,332
Bob got the PKM and MG-42 mixed up. Tony

SaigaNoobie 66
I was sitting there thinking "MG-42? Does he mean the Russian PK?" and BAM a couple posts down! It's intriguing, what do new PKM' Semi-auto's cost? wait, 6,000. Found it. So you'd need 10 new ones, (60k) and the work done by tony (60k) so 12k each for the first 10? Not bad for a Belt fed doomsday device.
BattleRifleG3 16
I thought he meant just using the PKM general design but redesigning for the 12ga round.
