NBC 7 said, "The first report came in as a man with a long gun" walking on campus. After about 30 minutes of S-I-P, staff member Bill Craig realized he fit the description of the possible gunman and surrendered himself to police. A SWAT team surrounded Craig and determined he had no gun in his possession. According to guns.com, Police released the following statement: Earlier this morning there was a report to University Police of a possible gunman at CSUSM. The campus was immediately placed on lock down. Police performed a security sweep and determined that the suspect was not armed, but was a staff member carrying a large umbrella and carry bag. We are grateful for the quick response by our police officers to the perceived threat and to our campus community for their cooperation during the brief state of emergency. Pointing rifles at me without damned good reason. And you can see them pointing their weapons at other people. They didn't observe first & see it wasn't a firearm? An umbrella & a carry bag, are they blind & stupid? No F'ing need to have weapons shouldered.

Im surprised DHS wasnt there to search for ISIS.
james lambert 3,059
People dont seem to realize some basic facts. If police are dispatched to a school for an armed man (long gun) They absolutely HAVE to assume it is a real and correct call. They cant just guess this guy does not have a gun in the bag. I could put a lot of hardware in a bag that size And they HAVE to treat it as a lethal threat to the students and themselves. Anything less is gross irresponsibility. You dont have to like it, you may not even be able to understand it. If the guy actually had bad intent, was armed and ready, and police walked up all friendly and UNPREPAIRED. He could kill them all and go on to kill more in the school. You dont take stupid chances with things like this
thebuns1 4,323
I think a simple squad car would have worked to see if the threat was actually real. And have SWAT on standby.
james lambert 3,059
In the wake of school shootings in the recent past, you can expect a robust response These guys are only there to protect the kids from potential harm. there are plenty of real examples of cops that are bad If you need to burn on cops, burn on the bastard rapist cop from OK that was just arrested. Mail him to hell, I will buy the stamps!!!

Bullshit, this was a "Man with a Gun" call, rifle/longarm, by some bleating sheep or student pranking or retribution on the guy. Cops would be able to see its a fucking umbrella & call "No Joy, its a fucking umbrella guys." So what he has a duffel or backpack, thousands of those walking around. What, check'em all at the point of a rifle? Bullshit! This shit is going too far. Edited August 24, 2014 by ChileRelleno

ChileRelleno 7,071
It seems like every other LEO carries tactical gear/weapons in their trunk, so this is likely not a dedicated SWAT unit. I see multiple uniform styles from differing depts along with plainclothes.

DLT 1,646
The cops overreacted. I can see it both ways, but in this case, they went way overboard. And honestly, pointing your weapon at the head of a man who has both open hands over his head and is completely surrounded is just FUCKING STUPID. One fart and you kill an innocent man, and there is no way to undo dead.

Without sensible umbrella control they can't take chances. Marry Poppins might be around every corner. That picture disgusts me. He might have a gun in his bag? So might every other human being in the country. Does "reasonable suspicion" now extend to every bag or only those carried by umbrella carriers? Fucking bullshit. Somebody give those "heroes" some medals. Fuck.
D.C.MORRISON 494
Because this has become ubiquitous in the U.S. We now have the term "swated". So chilli may be on the right track. It was the first thing that I thought of. A student given a bad grade, or rival faculty member may have called. These fellows rush in with adrenaline in their blood. Their assholes puckered around their necks. Pointing loaded rifles at everyone. What happens when two cars collide because a driver is stareing at these poges. A car back fires or or tyre blows? It might have just been a nervous nelly. But it's comforting to know that if someone tics me off. I can just have them "swated".

Sandy Hook didn't even happen. 9-11? Three buildings fell into their own footprint! Yeah right! I hate to see LEO falling for all this bull shit to show the public that they are protecting us. We don't need this kind of protection.
