  1. Good job that you got it to be workable. This seems like one of those problems that I will be likely to see too. I think the very worst thing that could happen is that you'd have to replace the gas block. Not good, but it's not like the whole gun is fubared or anything.
  2. Lt. Behenna's account of what happened should be accepted as fact unless there is clear evidence it is false. The Army should have had somebody not involved with the case return him to his village. Also, for those who are trained to kill, they are never unarmed.
  3. Sure, no problem. Post a pic of your modified S12 when you get a chance. We are all addicted to gun pr0n around here.
  4. It takes all of 30 seconds to do yourself. Much better than the stock part. http://www.mdarms.com/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=1724
  5. The gun may not cycle correctly with the buffer. Yes, it will damage the gun over time using the #2 gas setting for slugs. There are pics of the damage in this thread: http://forum.saiga-12.com/index.php?showto...st&p=296507 Get a Gunfixer gas plug so it's easier to change the setting for the current load.
  6. WTF! I don't understand this. Are we, or are we not at war with the terrorists? What's next....... confiscate Truman's estate and send it to Japan for A-bomb restitution?
  7. This post was right under the "Girls and guns" thread....... kind of got me to thinking.
  8. I know I liked my old Yugo...... bought it brand new for $3990 in 1988........ red with tan interior and the hood scoop! The thing was a blast to drive, bang through all four gears wide open and still not break the speed limit! It was like a street legal go-kart! I actually bought it instead of a go to work beater so I could keep high miles off of the new Mustang at the time. If you weren't sickened by the sight of the Yugo, here's more info about it from the Zastava factory: Zastava
  9. Nice job! I'm envious of you guys that have the skills and tool$ to do serious work like that. Just a note re: the safety stop...... it supposed to be able to come up and cover the ejection port so it can keep crap from getting into the gun. I know what you mean about it being irritating that it runs off the top edge of the receiver though. The perfect fix for that is a small divot drilled into the receiver along the safety's scribe line. That will give you a positive stop before it runs off the top edge, yet still allow you to fully close the safety. I've been meaning to do that o
  10. Was knocked offline by telco so I couldn't answer questions. Nope, I didn't see that they had anybody stopped. I didn't think current Illinois driver's licenses had RFID in them, but that may have started. My search for the answer to that question brought up interesting terms like "EDL" and "WHTI" in my Google searches. Looks like the EDL is the new National ID Card for now. Those initiatives were supposed to be for travel into the US and not travel within the US. Interesting that they can check IDs now without asking you or stopping you, and without your knowledge.
  11. Five-Seven pistol? I'd like to have one of them........
  12. They had everybody narrowed down to one lane with a long backup. By the time I got to the front of the line, I was glad to be moving again. I was late to my customer appointment because of that mess. Funny you mention that though..... as I was driving home, I thought that maybe I should have pulled over and asked about it. Then I figured I'd likely have been detained for being a wise-ass or something. I had one more thought on what it could have been..... radiation sensor? I've seen articles about DHS/State Police using those at weigh stations looking for nuclear materials.
  13. Lots of police checkpoints in the south subs of Chicago the last two days. I figure they are gearing up early for the holiday weekend. Had one yesterday where they had the typical "Safety Check" signs up and they were looking at seat belts. Something strange about the one I went through this morning though..... There were signs up for "Road work ahead" with a few guys in work vests just standing around not doing much of anything. Got to the front of the line (eventually) and there were squad cars in the median strip with a cop pointing some kind of little yellow device at each
  14. Good job! Any trouble getting the gas block off?
  15. What's the point of 2A if the govt. can make up a reason (martial law) to negate it anyway? Martial law is still not a good enough reason for gun confiscation. There is no good enough reason. "A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."
  16. "Aim Here"? LOL...... It looks like they are doing a small letter "a" or something. I watch "Gangland" sometimes (for the entertainment of watching them shoot each other) and there were a bunch of little bangers flashing the same sign to mean "A Street" (lettered street names) gang. Apparently one of the more violent groups in CA. Nice to see the bangers plans go horribly wrong for them in this case.
  17. It's essentially the same as an AK. Maybe a little more sensitive to re-installing the bolt carrier but that's it. Just make sure to use some downward pressure on the carrier. Search youtube for AK or AK field strip and you'll find a ton of videos.
  18. Tony, Are the broken S12 firing pins a common thing in your experience? Seems like maybe RAAC had a bad run of them...... Any chance of a "Tromix Improved Durability Firing Pin"? http://forum.saiga-12.com/index.php?showtopic=39584
  19. I would say that you would want to follow the suggestions to help the S12 handle light target loads. The idea is to maximize the gas power and minimize the resistance of the action. The first changes would be the Gunfixer gas plug, KA tappet, and the reduced power mainspring. Test with those changes and then determine if any further mods are needed. Just curious, is the rubber shot for LEO applications?
  20. Even if the load isn't strong enough to cycle the action, it will still fire the round. You could hand cycle the rubber shot until you get to more serious rounds. EDIT: Since you are a self proclaimed noob, I will say don't fire rubber shot at something you don't intend serious damage to. Rubber shot rounds are not paintballs.
  21. LOL..... couldn't help it, tampon is a giggle word. That is a great idea though! That makes another good reason to have tampons as a gun owner, they also make for a good plug to stuff in a bleeding wound.....
  22. That was pretty much my thinking. I wanted to clean it up, but maybe not go as far as I've seen here. I did use a Dremel stone to remove the crazy angles the Russians leave on the bolt. It doesn't seem like a good idea to have those ridges raking across the top round in the mag. The bolt has a smooth contour now and I polished with 600 grit silicon carbide paper. I didn't really remove much material though. Certainly not as much as Tony and Cobra did on their posted examples. I haven't had a chance to do any live testing yet, the gun hand cycles pretty smoothly now though. I was also
  23. I've seen warnings that the bolt can be ruined by doing this mod incorrectly, but no specifics were mentioned. Has anybody ruined their bolt doing this mod? Any tips on not ruining it?
  24. I used a Dremel like tool (Black & Decker) with a Dremel grinding stone on the rivets. It makes a mess with metal dust, but it was really easy to grind off the rivet heads. Much easier than it would have been to drill them. After pulling the Sporter plate, the rivet bodies were still quite a PIA to pound out. Got it done, but I broke a punch doing it.
  25. I noticed that the safety lever did that before I converted mine, nothing to do with the conversion. You could drill a small divot in the scribe line on the receiver so that the lever stops (detents) before it runs off of the upper edge of the receiver. I was going to do that, but then I figured that I never use the safety anyway, why bother?
