  1. Cabela's has a good deal on Herters 62g SP...500rnds $129.99 & free ammo box...Free shipping with NRASHIP promo code...and it says "in stock". Think it's done at 11pm tonight.
  2. My 03 EAA Saiga .223 FSG was so canted it wouldn't zero maxed out; it had to come off! I thought of trying a vice and a pipe wrench as a fix, but was afraid I would screwup the recvr. I ended up cutting off the FSG and putting a 24RH threaded Bulgarian AK74 & comp on it. Yes it looks like "Bubba" helped...if you look real close...pic is on #16 of .223 forum pic thread. But it works just fine...don't know that I needed a comp...but I can see the bullet hits and the reticle barely moves...from a bench. I probably shoulda tried the vice/pipe wrench route first. Or messing with the rear s
  3. Learn the 922 compliance stuff. For plinkin/training, US made hi-cap mags ($$urefire) for Saigas are fine. For SHTF weapon, the bullet guide/metal mag route is probably best. Again, learn the law.
  4. I have and 03EAA saiga. FSG so canted it couldn't be zeroed. Cut it off and replaced it with a press US made Bulg AK74 clone FSG...comes with a 24RH threaded shroud. Added a US made AK74 break...good to go. I had a machinist friend ream it out to be ~.001" smaller ID than my barrel OD. Heated it up and tapped it on...very tight fit and luckily centered pretty well. It stopped just short of lining up on the pin slots. So far has been so tight I haven't needed to tap on further or drill new slots. Only have a couple hundred rounds thru it tho. I think at least one sponsor sells the AK74 th
  5. I took a pinned/dimpled FSG off a 223 saiga. If you don't plan on re-using it's easy...use a dremel or small angle cutter and slice down each side, parallel with the barrel. Try to slice as close to the barrel as you can without nicking it. Then use a cold chisel to tap it off. If you do it neatly you can weld and re-finish the piece for re-use (too much work). I replaced the 223 FSG with a US made clone of a Bulg AK74 FSG with the 24mm threaded shroud...and added a US made AK74 brake.
  6. I've gone thru thousands of Wolf 9 and 45 and just gettin into 223 and x39...maybe I'm lucky....never seen a sideways primer or blew up a gun. Have had some FTFs & STVPPs over the years, but don't know for sure it was the ammo. Re-chambered ammo has always fired.
  7. One reason I bought a saiga....reliably use "cheap" ammo.
  8. #1 value per dollar spent on the saiga for quality & reliability #2 availability, price and ballistics of the .223/556 round #3 price and availability of all the accessories to create a desired configuration 3s the charm!!!
  9. Those high cap (high dollar) Surefire mags work great in my saiga x39. My nephew tried one in his WASR 10 (low on ammo tryin to sneak my ammo!)and it wouldn't fit...maybe it depends on what a "normal" ak is.
  10. I went with USA made AK74 clone...tried it today for first time...bench shooting with scope, sight picture doesn't move.
  11. Right you are...I plan on goin the guide route....I just wanted to see if it would work...It was pretty easy with a piece of hose clamp and some marine tex....not SHTF mag for sure. Like I said...I wanted to see if it would work...has for around 100rnds....so far.
  12. I have both, the Belarus BN02 and the 2-rail UTG, quick release side mounts. The Belarus needed to be adjusted out of the box, but is now rock solid and retains zero consistantly thru near 200rnds of dismount/mount sessions on x39. The UTG, on .223, has seen around a hundred rnds. During dismount/mount sessions I've had to re-tighten the adjustment screw twice so far. Once re-tightened it seems to hold rock solid for awhile. I'm happy with both...for the shooting I do. The BN02 holds a 16oz red dot and the UTG holds a 14oz scope. My dismount/mount sessions probably do the on/off thing alot
  13. My option...for now, since I only want a couple...is to re-work the circle 10s..Bulgarian? ones with metal re-enforcing....raising the front feed lip. I know they're not "battle field " quality, but they run great for plinkin.
  14. I have 2 surefire 30rndrs...each has a couple hundred wolf jhp thru it...no sign of where or tear on the mag. The tip never sees the mag...so I don't see where the issue would be. Maybe the issue is with the hollow pt binding to an off feed direction on a bullet guide???...but why would surefire care...unless they feed slightly lower??
  15. I recently aquired an 03 EAA .223 import. I had to remove the front sight group because it was so far canted to the left that it couldn't be brought to zero. It is one of the "heavy" 16.5" barrel imports...barrel OD is ~.620" till the FSG, where it is milled down to ~.596". I've only put a couple hundred rnds thru it...so far not a single problem. Seems very similar to my 08 RAA x39.
  16. Don't forget adapters....I'ver seen several available. That would allow an AR thread adapt to an AK thread or vice-versa...others available too. I have never tried any muzzle devices...other than on 9mm carbine. It would be nice to try various muzzle devices chambered for .223 on a Saiga. Perhaps someone with experience can comment...
  17. Me too...end of my .223 barrel is butt naked..having placed the HK style FSG back enough to allow threading or clip/screw-down muzzle device. I'd like to hear some first hand reports of the DPH clip/screw on AK74 device/ or any other temporary device. I will eventually thread as I decide which way to go...AK or AR or...
  18. My .223 03 EAA 16" barrel measures ~.615" just before the FSB...removed it and the barrel right at the muzzle is ~.587". Haven't decided whether to thread...AK or AR muzzle devices???...or just get the Phantom clip on set up.
  19. My x39 is set up with the Bushnell mentioned above...on a BN02 quick release. No complaints as of yet...only a couple hundred rnds thru with it on...bullet goes where the red dot is. The red/green and brightness options are a plus for bright or low light conditions. The only negative is the weight...it is near a pound. For the little bit of carrying and shooting I do...weight doesn't matter. If I was hiking alot with it, I might look to something lighter. I like what I read about the Vortex Strikefire...having a little magnification would be a big plus for my old eyes. Of course if this
  20. Thanks for the replies. I didn't know about the noise/blast issue with muzzle devices...having never fired a rifle with one before. I have a little experience and a few metal working tools at my disposal. And will probably do some threading work, conversion work and custom modifying for my own purposes eventually. I just don't have the time or money now to get into things full bore....but it will be fun someday. For now, the quick cheap stuff...just to scratch the surface will have to do....the learning curves has started...I like the Saiga....my AR buddies are in for touble . Thanks aga
  21. Thanks for the reply... looks like the quick, easy solution for this piece is a barrel adapter, 1:14LH and a AK74 type brake. I see several of each available at reasonable prices. What I don't understand is how some of the advertisements for the AK74 brake say 7.62x39. I thought an AK74 was for the 5.45 round??? Isn't a 7.62 bullet too big??? So they should be appropriate for a Saiga .223... right?
  22. I have an 03 EAA 16" barrel (.595" OD at the bore) that had a bad front sight group...which has now been replaced. With this barrel I'm guessing the easiest way to put a muzzle brake on it, is with a screw down type adapter, threaded end at LH 14/1...then go with an AK74 brake. I have less than a hundred rnds thru this and mostly scoped from bench. Recoil doesn't seem like much...but if I can make follow up shots easier and quicker with a muzzle break...that would be good. Also, I will be taking the scope off occasionally and doing some CQ type plinking. What are the +/- of muzzle brake /

  24. electrons, I used a Craftsman 4" angle grinder with a 4"metal cutting wheel. Just laid the rifle flat and solid on rag pile with a fairly wet rag towel under where the barrel was....they'll be lots of sparks. Use really good lighting because the metal cutting wheel will go thru the front sight group easily...you don't want to reach the barrel. Go lite to start...eye protection is a good idea. A couple swipes on each side...down the length of the FS was pretty much all it took. I went thru to the barrel and nicked it in a few spots....cosmetic, no where near as deep as the pin grooves. I
