Standardization and redundancy is always a good idea on guns, especially those where critical aftermarket replacement parts are not easy to find (like maybe the bolt on a Saiga 12). If you spend money on 10 magazines for a rifle and something like an ejector breaks, that money is wasted if no replacement is available. 10mm is absolutely superior to 40S&W ballistically, but it is longer and gives a heavier kick than most people want to handle in a compact carry or defensive handgun. I totally agree that an unarmed individual "hiding" won't be hard to find if they pop smoke. I personally don't ever plan on carrying smoke without a weapon if SHTF. My primary purpose would not be in the open desert, but in an urban environment if I had to get provisions or supplies during the day.
