  1. On a classic car forum I made a thread about rebuilding an old starter, and the associated saga. Some people questioned why I would bother when I could get a new one for about a hundred bucks, especially since the one I have isn't the one the car left the factory with. Told them I wanted the one my dad bolted onto it in 1960-whatever. Didn't turn the commutator myself... Actually took it to my gunsmith buddy and had him do it on his lathe.
  2. I think I managed to build a non-California-legal lever gun.
  3. People do it all the time... Form 1 includes instructions that are fairly self explanatory, but here's a more detailed explanation that appears to be up to date with the recent changes: http://johnpierceesq.com/the-complete-guide-to-the-new-form-1/ Also, worst they can do if they don't like how you filled it out, is reject it and make you start over, but it's my understanding that they will often send them back for corrections so you won't necessarily have to go to the end of the line. Just don't start building until after you have the approved form in hand.
  4. As I understand it, on an imported AK where the SN is on the trunnion, then the trunnion is legally part of the receiver, therefore removing the trunnion from an otherwise intact receiver amounts to removing the serial number, which is streng verboten. In order to do that you'd have to first demil the receiver, which legally destroys the firearm; there is a specific process that must be followed involving torch cutting the center portion of the receiver, which is spelled out in an ATF publication. Then you could legally remove the trunnion from what's left. If you didn't remove it and you d
  5. And with the new ITAR interpretation, a lot of part time gunsmiths who had reasonable rates, are going to get out of the business. Those that remain will have to charge more, and there will be fewer choices. It will be harder to find a smith who specializes in the particular work you want done, it will cost more, and you'll probably have to wait longer for it. So, doing what you can with what you've got is going to be even more of a thing, if the new "rule" stands. Edit: Thinking further, it seems like the law of unintended consequences will come into play... The government's goal is
  6. Rossi M92 Ranch Hand, .45 Colt Form 1 e-filed April 9, approved September 29.
  7. The Bellamy pledge is shit anyway... It was written by a socialist in an attempt to drum up business for his family's flag manufacturing company (ironic, yes). Indivisible, my ass.
  8. Pretty sure she would have burst into flame I would pay a great deal of money to watch that.
  9. A coupla pics for you: I helped change the body gear steering actuator in the second picture. On the ramp, in situ, with no slip plates. Was a fun time. A friend of mine lost his job after 9/11... He's a mechanic, who had worked his way into a management position, which was eliminated when aviation tanked. I guess he dove into a bottle for a while, then one day got sick of it and joined the army. Wound up as a blackhawk crew chief in Iraq.
  10. Like a lot of people in AK, I slept through the attack. I was in the process of moving and the wife had gone ahead to her new job while I packed stuff up; she called and woke me up. TV, etc. was packed but I left the computer until near last (priorities!) so I was on a shitty slow dialup connection in rural AK trying to get news from sites that were all slammed. Ended up having to go to World Nut Daily. I heard the news reports on the radio about Flight 93 and it sounded to me like the pax had fought back, which the news later confirmed.
  11. I kind of hope she hangs on until the election... If she croaks (or drops out now) the dems will have the opportunity to switch to a less beatable candidate. Actually I liked a suggestion I read elsewhere; both Trump and Hillary should undergo autopsies to judge their health and fitness to hold public office. It's the only way to be sure.
  12. Damn, I logged in specifically to post this, and you beat me to it.
  13. Didn't take long for them to backpedal: https://www.nraila.org/articles/20160831/atf-delays-any-changes-to-nitrocellulose-regulation Some defense contractors must have sicced their pet congressmen on them.
  14. This should be struck down in court due to lack of following the rule making process... They have to know this, but it will take time and resources to get it reversed, so it's just another FU to the gun culture like the ITAR letter, 41F, etc. We have a minimum of 4+ more months of this shit due to all of the dipshits that couldn't bring themselves to vote for a Mormon. Probably more like 4+ more years of it due to the people who would rather see Hillary win than vote for the amoral douchebag many of the same dipshits stuck us with for a candidate this time around.
  15. I posted about it last year, but when my original carrier cracked, I bought a couple of the take-off carriers that R&R had from new Saigas (don't want the relocated charging handle of their new carriers), and modified the one I used to remove all of the play from the joint. I drilled out the dimples, removed the extension, and stacked washers under it inside the carrier to maintain the original length dimension while allowing it to be tightened down snugly. Then I drilled through vertically (90 degrees off from the original dimples) for an AK gas piston rivet, and took it back apart. I
  16. Supposedly the folks behind the "Can Cannon" are working on a net launcher for it. Seems like just the thing for drones. Edit to add; the case of Soviet Union v. Powers established fairly conclusively that a landowner owns as much of the airspace over his property, as his air defenses can reach.
  17. To bring this more on topic, a friend of mine apparently stopped a brown bear with a Saiga 12 loaded with Brenneke slugs, however I didn't think to ask him if it was a "shovel ready" bear, or if it was harvested on a tag, or reported as a DLP kill. A lot of guys up here will buy a tag each year and carry it in case they have to dump a problem bear. If it happens to be in season when it happens, that way at least you get to keep the hide.
  18. Yup. These days a G20 is my woods gun, but for years all I had was a G29. However, I typically carry a long gun in any area where bears are a possibility.
  19. Just checked the trend graph at nfatracker.com, and the "curve" for an e-filed Form 1 has definitely crested, and wait times are coming back down. Not so much for paper forms.... Taking a wild-ass guess, since the e-forms site is not compatible with the new fingerprint/photograph requirements, ATF may make clearing the existing e-filed forms a priority, so they can then concentrate on the mountains of paper forms they are facing.
  20. The Internet is amazing that way. A couple of years ago I learned about a bunch of previously unknown cousins that I had never knew existed. Apparently my grandmother's first husband had split and taken their two sons with him, and she was never able to find them. My mother in law is big into one of the online geneology sites, and was one day contacted by a son of one of my unknown uncles, and we were able to put him in touch with that side of the family (which I'm not particularly close with, so I still haven't met any of those people). It was a dream come true for my grandmother learning
  21. I looked at their website and that seemed to be how they were accepting payments. Yeah; they looked good and worked well. If they'd have had metal reinforcement in the locking lugs and maybe the feed lips, they would have had a phenomenal magazine. As it was, they were still decent, and way better than the SGM and Promag offerings. Maybe not something I would trust my life to due to the lack of metal reinforcement, but they are fine range mags. Edit to add: I hope the molds have been preserved in case Saigas can ever be imported again. There's certainly been a lot of drama
  22. Article touched on some of the asinine laws we have in this state. Survive a bear attack, and you are required to immediately skin the bear and hand over the hide to the troopers... So they can sell it for profit in an auction they hold each year. They will sit there and watch while you do it, and if you don't know HOW to skin a bear, write you a ticket for doing it wrong. And it seems like a lot of the time they will decide after the fact that you didn't really need to kill that bear, and prosecute you for illegally taking a bear. As a result, a lot of bears that are legitimately killed
  23. No idea but it wouldn't surprise me. Between the import ban and CSSpecs putting out a superior product, their business has to have dropped off to nothing. It's too bad because they are decent mags and their improved internals seem to have fixed the feeding problems I had with the original FBMG magazines. Personally I would try to cancel the order through Paypal and get your money back, then pay a couple bucks more per mag and buy from CSSpecs.
