Saiga .223 Mags, Options.

Recommended Posts

Well i have been reading and searching this forum extensively because i am planning to do a conversion, New stock, hand guard, pistol grip and so on. I have everything planned. Which stock, which grip, hand hand guard everything but the damn mags are killing me.

The only thing bugging me is mags, i do not know what to do about them, people say if you convert adding a bullet guide, then you are open to more options what options are those i have not found any website selling .223/5.56 mags. I found GALIL mags at numrich which seem to be my only option. What other mags do people talk about?

I been reading and the mags that i think will best suit me are the GALIL and Bulgarian Waffle because these are the ones people say are the best and take minimal modding to make them work.

Where to locate them? i found GALIL now where do i find the BULGY waffles?

After i find my mag sources and secure at least 10 it will be time to start my ak-103 look alike for shtf....

I was in the same boat as you were. I even have all the tools to manufacture/install a bullet guide, but the .223 mags were eluding me. I finally gave up and bought me 2 surefire steel mags that the local gunstore here had. I couldn't even find the darn things for sale in the internet.

I know my post isn't helping you a bit looking for the mags, but the .223 magazine issue is a real bummer...maybe we should have just bought the Saiga 7.62X39? Good luck and have fun!

That's my biggest issue with my .223. I have the waffle mags but they won't fit in the gun without modifications (or run without a bullet guide). Hopefully the AR magwell being made will solve my problems.

Those are technically what you want, but the clear ones aren't as strong as the opaque. Not sure what difference that makes in "the real world", but just a FYI.

$25 is about the average price for these. Yes, it's kinda high compared to some, but the flip side is: these will last as long as you want to keep them (at least the opaque ones).

When I converted my .223 Galil mags could be had for $5 each so I made a bullet guide and stocked up on the Galils. I found a place recently that sells magazines specifically for the Saiga .223 and it looks like you don't need a bullet guide or anything. Don't know how well they work as I have not tried them but if I was doing a conversion now I would go with these. They are fairly inexpensive at $23 also.

They are towards the bottom of this page:

I am gonna go with Magnolia State Armory after being decided on Galil's and Bulgy's.... Less hassle....

And if one day SHTF i can just tell the AR guy to let me borrow a mag ;)

Thanks for all the help guys...

So do most AK74 magazines work without modifications, or do most not work without mods to the gun or mag?? Where do you get the promag versions that do fit? thanks (223 Saiga newbie)

Like - would these work without gunsmithing?

AK74 mags are not going to be reliable because the cartridges have a different shape.

You may get 100% reliablity when using 10 rounds in them, but eventually, the cartridges will bind up in a magazine not designed for them.

For best results, use .223 AK mags for .223 AKs and leave the AK74 mags for the AK74s.

P.S. One reason this "you can use Ak74 mags in your .223 AK" got started is that Century used to ship their SAR-3 with East German AK74 mags with special paint and the floorplates stamped ".223" (this did not make them reliable for .223, though). You used to be able to get AK74 mags for $1 each, too.

I found Danzig's writeup on the mods it takes to fit a galil 223 mag. Has anyone actually tried this? How difficult is it to do, and did you use sand paper, dremel, file, what tool? It would suck to scrap a 30-60 dollar mag with some garage mods to it not properly done.

Not sure what his writeup entails, but all ya gotta do is flatten out these ribs on both sides.

thanks - one on order.

Danzig's writeup is here:

found some 35rd Galil orlites for 25 bucks, which seemed like a decent rate, but they slam you for shipping, so perhaps it's a wash (like 9 bucks??)

DANGER WILL ROBINSON!!

DANGER!!

DANGER!!

Stay far far far far [infinitely] far far away from Florida Gun Works.

They are very well known to the Florida BBB as rip off artists.

Just google them and find out for yourself how they do business.

that made me LOL

in regards to the mags.. this might be an unpopular comment.. but i just went with the surefire ones for my 7.62 and plan to do the same with my .223 they are US made so add a compliance cushion.. and are a direct fit..

I decided to round up Saiga Specific 30 round mags. So far one sure fire in hand and 5 Pro Mags enroute, and another on backorder. Rather than mess with mag modifications and bullet guides, I went for correct mags. They are also 3 compliance parts.

I also have the Tapco M4/SAW pistol grip conversion for now (59.99) ready to put on. Eventually I want to do a "real" PG conversion and a Galil handguard, but this will do for now. I also plan on putting an M16A1 flash hider on it, and ventilating the Handguards until I can afford Galil style. I will eventually put a low rise side mount and reflex sight.

The Saiga is going to be my fun and farm gun. It will replace my Underwood/Singer M1 Carbine that holds that role now. My serious weapon will be my M4. I have a dandy chrome lined, 1/7" twist, 16" flat top M4 on a DPMS lower with A2 Colt stock. I a just finished building up (just waiting for the Aimpoint M2). It has a flip up ARMS style back up iron sight and an NCStar wide angle reflex on it now. The reflex will go on the Saiga when the M2 shows up.

Has anyone tried the mags from Davids collectible magazines? They offer 30 rounders specifically for the Saiga 223 for 24.99. I hope someone has and can enlighten us on their quality.

This is my first post here. I sure was glad to find out that I'm not the only one in love with these rifles! I only wish that I would have had the courage to lay down money on one when they were cheaper and more plentiful i.e. before Osama got elected!

Thanks y'all !

Do you have a link or URL? I couldn't find him. They are probably Pro-Mag. Sportsman's Guide has a good price on promags but are out of stock and not expecting any for 45-60 days. Promag web sight has them, much higher $29 each including shipping. They are in stock, but now backed up 3 weeks on shipping. Sure fire's are readily available, but run $38 to 45 each! I bought one to have while I wait on my Pro mag and Sportsmans guide orders.
