krinkguy2 0
What is you opinion on gettting a Saiga 12 with a galil charging handle? For a self-defense gun? For a competition gun? I have never shot one with it installed.
nalioth 405
To be honest, I'd prefer an Rk95 style charging handle. Edited November 13, 2008 by nalioth
jmacken37 4
I really like the Galil charging handle. It is much easier to operate as a right hander. Niaolith, that handle looks pretty nice, too. Jake
Gunfixr 76
Well, I like them, but I am a right handed shooter who doesn't want to roll the gun all the way ove to get the handle with my left hand. I also don't plan on putting an optic either on the dust cover or on the side rail. If you put an optic in either of these places, a Galil handle is useless. If the details are worked out right, it also allows a folding stock to fold to the right. If you're wondering about shooting with one, and that handle flying back and forth in front of your face, I don't notice it myself. So, it's all up to you. BTW, Nalioth, that is an interesting handle.
nalioth 405
To further hijack the thread, that rifle is the Finnish Rk 95, considered to be the zenith of the Kalashnikov design. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RK_95_TP
Eric Pate 478
+1 for the Galil. Makes racking the bolt much easier, IMO. edited to add: I think I like it cause you can use the heel of your palm to rack the bolt rather than your fingertips which are comparatively weak. Many combat-oriented shooting schools recommend against techniques which require fine motor skills, as these are the first ones to crap out when you're in a stressful situation. But I guess its whatever works for you. Edited November 13, 2008 by DistalRadius
BobAsh 582
I like the vert handle. The Finn 45 degree looks cool too. I'm working on a new design for my new S-12, actually
Franky 2
I can't stand the Galil charging handles + they might have a tendency to catch on clothing or something else. IMO
BobAsh 582
...they might have a tendency to catch on clothing or something else. Actually I find the vertical handle hugs the gun better. The regular AK handle is always chewing through whatever you put the gun in.
GPalmer 1
Thumbs up on the Galil here...
gpqueen 545
I like the Galil's. Much easier to clear over the top in competition. Bob what are you working on? Give us a hint. Greg
gpqueen 545
I have heard of some people that are going to make a charge handle on the left side. Greg Edited November 13, 2008 by gpqueen
nalioth 405
I have heard of some people that are going to make a charge handle on the left side.Greg You're behind the times. The Lightning Bolt mod has been available for a while now.
6500rpm 670
I like the Galil handle on the Galil, never tried on on the s12 but I'd like to know if the carrier (recoil) spring makes a difference in how it feels to rack back. What I'd like to tinker with is a charging handle like the FAL or some Galil Micro's use (more of a knob), and possibly the same on a set up like the lightning bolt using it (if the cut cover can deal with the s12 recoil). Back on subject, I've never had problems with the Galil handle catching on stuff while in use and I agree that it's not a distraction at all when shooting. I think the biggest concern on the s12 would be to have a capable welder install it.
Azkamidaka 26
I think that lightning bolt charging handle is pretty cool but almost useless for anybody that bought one when cobra releases his LRBHO and mike releases his magwell....but that rk95 charging handle is pretty nice. Superhawk138 202
I like the looks of the Galil handle, But if you have optics mounted, they can be a little difficult to use. Now the 45 degree Rk95 handle is sweet as well and allows better use if optics are used.
Twinsen 86
GAH! What is the AK that has a regular old looking charging handle, but bent at a 45 degree angle. I thought it was the AK-74, but looking it up now, it isn't. I was so sure of it, too.
Alpha Kilo 42
I think a galil handle on the left side might be worth trying out. One thing I wouldn't like about the LB is being poked my the AK style handle. 1st thing that comes to mind though is it recoiling back in front of your face might be more distracting than if it were on the right. Maybe not.

nalioth 405
I'd rather have a Finnish style 45 degree charging handle (big and meaty). The Romanians just bent the existing skinny charging handle to 45 degrees, and it'll rip the snot out of your hand if you're not paying attention.
