Saiga 12 -- My view and experience

Recommended Posts

Theres been alot of hostility on this forum lately.

I know its frustrating to veteran S12 forumers but we are here to help not scold people so they think we are a bunch of buttholes like the ar.com peeps

Its a forum theres no way to eliminate reposts newbs etc

Be nice lead them in the right direction its not just your forum its the saiga community's and we are not all geniuses

922r is like a red turn arrow

Theres no traffic for a mile radius you could easily run it safely all night but there is always a chance a cop is hiding there

Political bullshit just another way to have control/influence on us sheeple

P.S. dont worry about the haggling. On my first post I was accused of being an advertiser and pretty much got gang banged b4 a moderator stepped in and said there was nothing wrong

Well.... welcome aboard....

I got called out a while back for the things I neglected to say.... I thought it was bad, but this blows that sitch away.

This thread is incredible and it looks like you found Klassy's button (Hi Klassy). I wasn't offended at all by the things you said, I just thought they were based on ignorance. Don't take it the wrong way, please. I'm not calling you unintelligent or anything of that nature. When you restore your S12 you will see the light. I just don't understand how you can have such a strong position about restored weapons when you have never experienced one. Anyways, I'm glad you are excited about your S12 because.... that is where the evl seeds of restoration start  Go to the Izhmash site and you will see that S12s were originally intended to have a pistol grip and a separate buttstock. They are imported in 'nuetered' configuration (sporterized).... like yours. This is an excellent opportunity for some restored S12 porn....

BTW We want to shoot birdshot because it is cheap.... I can fire 400 rounds for $100. For all we know, birdshot may be all we can find someday (or worse, all we are allowed to posess). I would rather know my weapons will reliably eat any 12ga round I can find.... and they do.

evlblkwpnz, I took your advice and visited the official Izhmash site (actually, I've been there many times before and it seems you have not) and look what I found...

saiga12.jpgsaiga12_kamuf.jpg

Seems that my stock-in-the-box Saiga 12 "unconverted" is a legit Izhmash model. The Saiga 12K is a seperate model and not available here in the states. You can take AK parts, some altered, some not and grind away on your stock Saiga 12 receiver to make it look just like a Saiga 12K. Go right ahead, to each his own. I have handled and fired both converted and unconverted Saiga 12's and I truly prefer shotties with standard (non-pistol grip) stocks (which include my 870 and Mossie). I have owned pistol grip types, Benelli M2 and M4, Spas-12, etc...but I truly believe in the superiority of the Saiga platform, whatever the "configuration". My home is currently in NJ (sob) and by law, my Saigas there are unconverted with factory 5 round mags. My house in PA and at the range in PA that I shoot at, my Saigas are unconverted with factory five round mags.

I hear it all the time, that I need to "restore" my Saiga. Then as soon as one answers back as to why they prefer the stock model, people crawl out of the woodwork and say "Relax...nobody cares if you convert or not!"...really. Some of you "restoration" guys are starting to sound like Jehovah's Witnesses... "Walk into the light of Tromix's love (I will own a 8" SBS from Tony and that will have a pistol grip) and be embraced by Red Jacket's arms...Amen!".

Both of my Benelli's (great weapons) are based on hunting guns with fancy tactical furniture, finish and a bit of tweeking. Wonder if I should put some nice walnut hunting stocks on 'em, re-blue and restore 'em.

Oh yeah...fun thread.

You are correct, the 'sporting' S12 is a "legit" Izzy model (they come from the Izzy factory in 'sporting' configuration for US civilian consumption), but the S12 was originally intended to be used by Law Enforcement and Private Security units.... and it wasn't in 'sporting' configuration.

I don't care if you restore or not. If you like it nuetered, more power to you. You will save some money. All of the S12s I own will be restored. I have had Norinco AK Hunters with the same 'sporting' stock configuration and I hate it. I converted the one that I kept. It just doesn't feel like an AK with that 'sporting' stock and trigger configuration. The original balance of the AK platform is ruined by that setup.

Enjoy your S12s....

Your doing a wonderful job re-writing the Saiga shotgun story. The Saiga shotgun started as a design excercise to see if the AK action could be made to reliably cycle shotgun ammunition. One of the first marketable models was the hunting series (legal for Russian civilians to own). The Sport model was actually made for the Russian market and then sold to several other markets (including ours) with strict firearms laws.

Also, just why is my Saiga nuetered (neutered?)? It functions identically to any pistol grip set-up and cycles low brass all day on 2 (one of my mates at the range is, lets say...frugal and shows up with 10 or so boxes of cheap stuff. It will run through my Saiga flawlessly). We have a rack at each station at our range and when we are shooting shotgun, we'll have 6-8 different weapons on the rack. My latest somewhat stock Saiga 12 that I have set up for slugs never sees the rack and just gets handed from one shooter to the next. One of the first comments from a new shooter to one of my Saigas is what great balance it has. The balance point is right at the mag release. I've shot restored Saigas that had terrible balance depending on what and where things were hanging off.

People keep saying that they don't care if one restores or not,,,and then finish with negative comments on why my Saiga is inferior.

O'K', I'm done. Out.

Well... I'm gone for a day and now we have a great debate.

First let me again say that I really didnt mean to offend anybody. Go convert your saiga, shoot birdshoot and be merry. Or don't. Some people like

big fake titties and some like natural titties, and some like em both.

I understand some people can only find birdshot or need it for 3 gun and its cheap, thats cool too. But for me, this shotgun is a fighting/defensive

weapon so I will only run 00 buckshot first and slugs second. The best find/buy Ive found is the German made wolf full power 2 3/4 00 buck. $180 a case, 50 boxes,

and it groups tighter than the more expensive remington and federal 00.

Thats a damn good price considering the times we live in. I just ordered 2 cases, one to practice with and one to stock that I wont touch unless Zday or whatever happens. Plus this hobby/sport WILL NOT get cheaper as the months and years roll by, and thats not counting what can happen with new laws that might be coming. Thats why I'm trying to stock up on all mags and ammo for every weapon/caliber I have. And if you have the $$ for fancy stocks and red dots and tact lights, then goddamnit

you better have the $$ for the best/most ammo and mags you can get, can I get a amen!

I personally like my saiga the way it is, its well balanced and I don't mind the trigger, not only that but its deadly fast and handy as is. That being said Ive never fired a converted one. One of the things I picked up while lurking around here is if you dont convert, you are a dumbass and dont deserve the gun. So I became somewhat biased torwards those people, whoops my bad I guess, I am Italian so work with me here.

Just thinking and reading through all this Ive come to only one conclusion..

Im trading in one of my beloved 870s with extended mags(both with knoxx spec ops stocks which are fucking awesome and really do work)and picking up another

saiga 12. Im going to do this for 2 reasons.

1. These weapons keep going up in price, in 5 years how much will one cost, if they are still legal to buy?

2. I will convert this one just to prove to myself I know what Im talking about. If its that much better than the sporter

than Ill say, "well gee guys you were right!" Looks cooler, yeah maybe, but better and "deadlier", I doubt it. I said before "fear not the weapon but the hand that wields it" thats %100 true. This conversion will be a few months in the making cause like I said, Im focused

on ammo and mags first. I will however take donations.

Damn Im so cool :blues:

The S&B 9 pellet OO buck is a good value too. It won't fit in drums but you can get it for about 50 cents a round. Ive run about a thousand rounds through mine and its never skipped a beat. Try a Saiga with a real trigger and you'll never go back to the sporter trigger. The sporter trigger is just a lever that activates a cut off factory trigger so at best its a compromise. At worst its long and creepy.

I don't give a damn if you or anyone else follows 922r. I do but just because the American made parts are not any more expensive than the foreign parts and theres not many needed to do the job.

What does being Italian have to do with anything?

It means I speak my mind. If youve ever spent time with any Italians you would know what I mean.

Im full blooded both sides of the fam are. Ive also been there 14 times. I was lucky enough to land a

great security gig in Austria after I got out of the military, where I lived for almost 5 years. Italy was

a few hours drive away, great place to go for a weekend.

Whats funny is I would talk with people over there and I would say " oh yeah Im Italian too"

And they would say "no focker youre American".

Give it up Klassy, don't feed the trolls, you have been here long enough to know better. This guy is obviously an idiot and won't be here long. Hell if he were as smart or as cool as he thought he was, he would be making money by selling his own doublestacks here by now. I bet his dumb ass isn't even 25 yet, and that this is his very first AK style weapon. Hell his cherry is still bleeding from being popped. The only thing he knows is the shit he has read from this forum and is spewing right back at us.

Other than that, welcome to the forum Saigalupo.

I hope you learn to talk to adults and change your attitude a little bit. You will learn something, I promise. Grown people tend to be smarter than given credit for.

Does that make you feel better just assuming away? Youre actually really wrong buddy, Ill be 30 in 2 weeks. I have served my country, and I have lived over seas

after that for a great deal of time. I know, some people get jealous hearing that sort of thing, especially spoiled brats which I suspect you might be. And if you payed attention to my posts, I make alot of sence and know what im talking about, maybe you can learn something boy.

Also I have owned two AKs in the past, but traded them up for other things. Not because I didnt them but because I needed the trade in money. Now, I stick to .308 for my rifle needs, mainly FALs(one of the best rifles around, will fire commercial .308 and 7.62x51mm nato all day long)and my remmy 700p.

Can I prove it? sure, come over my place and ill show you my dd214, my passport and some really sweet pics of me

all over the damn place.

How you like that?

+1 on the S&B 9 pellet 00 buck. I've put many of these rounds through my shotguns and have never had a ammo related issue. One of the best bang-for-the-00 buck (sorry) deal out there. Lately though, I've been getting a tremendous deal on the Wolf (In my opinion, best ammo in OO or slug), but that deal arrives on a pallet.

On the triggers, from 1960's Russian manuf. to every variant and country of manuf. thereafter, AK factory triggers are pure shit. First thing an AK guy today does to a new acquisition is a trigger job. We have a few Tromix converted shotguns at the range (not mine) and the triggers are flawless, beautiful work, almost a waste on a shotgun. I wish I had my AK's put together by him. That guy takes tremendous pride in his work and it shows, so rare nowadays. There is a supplier I use (no names, no need to hurt anyone) and he has several models of converted Saigas in stock. The ones under $1000 (I don't know who does them) have really poor triggers/ trigger function.

After a few trips to the range, I always freshen up (I wouldn't call it a true trigger job) the triggers on my new stock Saigas and for what they are, function very smoothly, certainly better than a stock factory AK trigger.

I've gone back many times to read saigalupo's original post to see if I missed something. Above is quoted the one and only sentence about 922r. That's it. No chest thumping. I've read far more inflammatory threads on the subject here before. For example, back when Mike at MDArms first proposed his drum, the threads got hot and some were borderline dangerous legally and now Mike is a bit of an Icon here.

I was just about to reply to saigalupo's first post to warn him that he was going to stir the angry bees when he got Klassy's (funny) first response. I wasn't going to warn saigalupo about his 922r comment, seen worse here, but the comments that were anti-birdshot and anti-conversion. That shit will get you gang raped on this forum. The really embarassing comments were made in the responses to saigalupo. After the first reply, he did make some silly remarks, but they were seemingly in defense. The really childish comments have come from those responding to him. Everyone, take a few days and go back and follow this thread from the start. I'm sure we'll see even more 'Edited by...' notices then.

Ill have to give that brand a test and see how I like it. Wolf is my fav so far and Ive been pleasantly surprised by it.

Yes Ive been hounded from post one, mostly by spoiled brats who play too much video games. But Ive apologized and tried to move on but you know

how these silly kids on forums behave. Especially jerkoff ones from Jersey.

What does being Italian have to do with anything?

Give it up Klassy, don't feed the trolls, you have been here long enough to know better. This guy is obviously an idiot and won't be here long. Hell if he were as smart or as cool as he thought he was, he would be making money by selling his own doublestacks here by now. I bet his dumb ass isn't even 25 yet, and that this is his very first AK style weapon. Hell his cherry is still bleeding from being popped. The only thing he knows is the shit he has read from this forum and is spewing right back at us.

I'm sorry. I just can't resist. This guy's just too much of a tool. I have a feeling this fist pumping douche bag needs to go the fuck back to Seaside Heights with the rest of the Jersey Shore cast.

And now that he's pulled the arrogant Italian card, I now have an endless supply of guido jokes. Fuck man, he couldn't have made it more easy for me now. I'm from Jersey and deal with these fucks on a daily basis :lolol:

Keep talking Jersey boy, its easy over the cpu. Typical jersey jackoff, talks too much and probley cant back it up.

I bet you live in your moms basement and play wayy to much COD on xbox, have a couple guns and thinks he knows everything.

I bet YOU listen to ICP and drive around in your IROC trying to impress those skanky Jersey girls lol. Man o man

I kinda feel bad for you now. But you are Italian so, at least you got that going for you.

Hey, you seem to be doing plenty of shit talking over the internet yourself :lolol:

By the way, it's spelled "Probably," but I bet you're too much of a free spirit to spell words the way the man says to spell them, man.

Whoops I type without looking at the keyboard. And Im just responding to your BS posts ya jealous prick motherfucker.

You know what's really funny...I'm from Jersey. WHAT EXIT! LOL. Not born here, just lived here off and on my whole life. It's like one of those conditions where you pull out all of your hair or cut yourself. This place is no Leno joke, it really is a shit hole. Constanly make it my FBO for business reasons. Met my wife here, you know, skanky Jersey girl. No apologies please...I'm tellin' her as soon as she gets home. She was born and raised right at the beach, 100% Irish girl though. Auburn hair, fair skin, freckles...looks like she jumped out of an Irish Spring commercial.

You need to relax and ignore the silliness. You can find some great information here...just don't step in the bullshit.

Lol sorry man I need to stop reponding to lil boys. I know that not everybody in Jersey is a jersey shore wannabe, no disrespect to you or your mrs intended.

Im was actually born and raised in an almost as shitty place, Youngstown OH. The only way out was the military so I took it.

My work transferred me to Minneapolis MN which is where I live now, great state!

I think this thread is done, the mallninjas have taken over

...Also, just why is my Saiga nuetered (neutered?)? It functions identically to any pistol grip set-up...

the fuck it does. Why don't you compare the Rube-Goldberg mess of a trigger group you've got in one of your "sporter" Saigas against a semi-auto AK trigger group, (like those used in restored S-12s), and just see if you can manage to find any difference(s), genius.

You sure are arrogant in your ignorance, though. Pray tell... are you a Democrat? :D
