I want to get something in 9mm, and I've been considering the following:

Colt Defender

http://www.coltsmfg....14/Default.aspx

Baby Eagle Fast Action

http://www.magnumres.../Baby_Eagle.asp

Steyr M or S-A1

http://www.steyrarms...yr-pistol-s-a1/

Sig P226

http://www.sigsauer....=7&productid=90

I like the style of the Defender most, but it's also the priciest. I like the compact high capacity of the Baby Eagle, and its price is good, too. I really like the design of the Steyr, but it's hard to find and might be overpriced. I don't really like the Sig, but it comes highly recommended. It is also more expensive than I'd like to pay.

Any experience and opinions with these pistols? Or any other 9mm recommendations?

Hicap 9s -- cz, fn, smithwesson m&p, glock. Keltec p11, ruger sr9, beretta, taurus......

Single stack --- keltec pf9, kahr, norinco 213, zastava, some sigs, .......

What are you looking for? Easy carry? Duty type? Cheap?

Looking for around $500 or less, quality build, but good for lots of range practice. Not so much for easy carry but to replace the shotgun at bedside.

Is single-stack more reliable?

No single stack is more comfortable and concealable for carry (slimmer, less bullets = less weight)

Around $500 cz p07, 75. Used Glock 17, 19. Zastava ez9 ($350ish) ruger sr9, taurus, keltec p11 There is probably more that I havnt thought off.

Buds has the cz p-01 for under $500. 9mm 18+1

I got a Ruger P89 as my first 9mm, it only cost $350 and came with 4 15rd mags. I have found its a great starter gun, cheap, and pretty sturdy. Its fairly accurate, and easy to disassemble and clean. Its a little on the heavy side, but I like the weight. It has ambidextrous mag release and safety switches. I have put 500+ rounds through it, cheap Russian surplus, brown and silver bear, and never had a ftf or stuck round. If you find one of these I recommend it.

I picked up a brand new Glock 17 Gen 4 earlier this year for $525 at a local store. It came with three 17 rd mags. It's been 100% reliable so far. I find it to be very ergonomic, light, low recoil and accurate. Coupled with a mag-full of CorBon P+ HPs, in my opinion, it makes for a great night stand gun.

I own a Steyr M40-A1 (which of course is the .40 S&W caliber version), and simply LOVE IT and I really like the trapezoidal sights; I'd recommend the M9-A1 in a heartbeat (if you can find one).

Otherwise. . . for your consideration. . . and providing you're willing to go up another C note, I encourage you to take a hard look at a surplus H&K P7 PSP. The schlitz-factor and accuracy really doesn't get any better. (YMMV of course.)

I have a Baby Eagle hand me down, all steel. It's a great shooting pistol and 16 +1 aint bad for a nightstand gun either.

My XD9SC gets carry time and shoots like a service size 9mm. The extra mag with added length and capacity really makes a difference in control.

I carry an MK9 often which is a pleasure to shoot and carry, but not the best nightstand gun because of capacity.

All came in for less (new and used) than your price point.

Lately, I been really looking at the XDM9 3.8. Small enough to carry and all the qualities of a service high capacity.

Used Glocks, well within your price range, are still good to go for a long time.

Check out Aim surplus They have used Gen 3 Glock 17s for under $400. Police trade ins

+1 Can't go wrong with a G17. It's a proven weapon, parts are cheap and plentiful and it can take 33rd mags. What's not to love?

AIM also has brand new Sig 9mm's for a great price (some are out of stock ATM, but Brian said more are on the way). They're the P250 model compacts and sub-compacts. I don't know a damn thing about Sigs, so I'm not sure how they differ from the Sig model you have listed in your OP. But for $360, they seem like a steal.

I've been gravitating to Glock for my pistol use. They go bang, and are as reliable as they come. They're cheap enough so you don't worry about carrying them and beating them up. Buy used if you don't care about the way they look, because they'll always go bang.

The cheap aftermarket makes it the clear winner, in any contest.

Sig Sauer had been having a bit of a difficulty establishing a foothold in the modern polymer pistol market. The modular polymer P250 pistol series is their second attempt, after the very decent, but unsuccessful and obscure Sig Pro line. The P250s are a steal right now, because Sig is trying to undercut the competition (primarily Glock and Springfield) in order to establish that foothold.

THe p250 is 2 calibers and 3 sized guns in one. The serial # along with the triger mechanism are all on one skeleton metal housing and can be taken out. The slide and the frame can be swaped for a full size, compact or sub compact. Calibers can change from 9mm - .40 only. 45 is its own gun.

I used to have an XD(M), before I became a Glock man. IMO, Glock is a better built piece. It's obvious, after you field-strip both of them. I mean, it's Austrian engineering vs Croatian... c'mon! Plus, Glock has proven itself in the field over and over again. I see Gen 4 Glocks (what I have) being sold at slightly lower prices than XM(M)s and they come with three mags. Gen 4 Glocks also have lower perceived recoil and widely available, high quality 32 rd mags. As far as I am concerned, there's no good reason to get an XD(M) over a Glock right now... maybe if it was $100 cheaper or something...

I have owned a Glock 17, M&P, Sig P226, XD, and CZ-75B in 9mm. I have also spent time on P99's, Beretta 92's, and H&K P30's. All things considered, I would get a S&W M&P9 FS with the APEX DCAEK. If you want something with a hammer, get a P30. Read the following threads and you will be well informed by some very experienced and knowledgable people:

I think it will be hard finding those for under $500. I mean, if you can, awesome,

however, I would also look at new (as in non-used) pistols in Taurus's and Ruger's lineup.

Ruger pistols are not ideal for CC, since they are the tanks of the pistol world. However

they live forever. I have a 22 semi auto, two 357s, and a 40 from them, and they are all

awesome.

Taurus is good, some things are not good choices. The trigger on the Millenium sucks massive

goat dong. I picked up a pt-740 slim recently for $350, and I like it. I also have a pt-101,

which is the 40 version of the modern version of their beretta knockoff, the pt-92, and my

old man has one of the 92s as well. Both of those are good pistols.

A CZ-75 is another way to go. I'd post pics of mine, but I keep it wrapped up in the box, still has the original oil on it and everything. Got it about 20 years ago while in Germany at a Rod and Gun club when the Czech police were practically giving these away :P

Same place I got my CZ-50s too.
