    I had this same idea way back with my brother's 10/22 when we were kids. The 10 round mags were super reliable, 30 pretty good and 50 jammed all the time. But I think it really does come back to the quality of the mag more than anything else. There are some crappy 40 rd ar mags, but I think I'll pick up some 40 rd pmags one of these days.

    I know this thread is over a year old, but finally got around to doing the same thing to one of my ar's. It was a PSA upper with a slightly canted front site. Chopped it down and put a Troy rail on. Balance on it now is great.

    I had one of those back in the 1990s. I wish I didn't sell it : ( It was a great shooter and my first "AK" I don't have 1200 for it, but seems like a pretty good price. Good luck.

    I was at Cabelas and picked up 2 300 rd boxes of Lake City for$169 each. Not great, but not terrible. Then I saw Dunham's had the same thing for $199. Not everyone's caught up.
