  1. Number codes are likely arsenal lot codes. "O" marked Galil mags are South African manufacture. Israeli Galil mags will be marked IMI with a year datecode.
  2. Yes the prices are higher than several years ago, but the supply has been relatively steady in replenishment, especially if you compare it to 2008. Unless prices skyrocket out of sight, I have no serious complaints yet. The only reason I'm stockpiling ammo is that I get tired of running out and having to wait for more to come. I'm trying to keep a buffer of about 1,000 rounds of the main three calibers I shoot.
  3. I just picked mine up from my FFL yesterday. I bought it from a dealer friend of mine, and I ended up having to wait several months for it when his order to Century got stalled. It turned out to be well worth the wait. All proper features, including full-length RPK bipod (vs. incorrect PKM bipod), carry handle, adjustable rear sight. Trunnion is arsenal stamped and dated 1969, and all parts are serial matching except the dust cover and safety lever. When looking at the wear on the trunnion, bolt, and carrier, the gun appears virtually unfired, and the barrel even looks new - chrome plating is
  4. Here in Kitsap County, WA we had some Japanese exchange students at the local range last year. Several LEO and military were there at the same time. No big deal. They even got to fire a few Arisakas. http://www.kitsapsun.com/news/2011/aug/15/japanese-students-take-aim-during-exchange/
  5. People have built kits with hand tools but it's labor intensive and you run the risk of ruining a kit. Screw kits are an option that some have taken, but generally frowned upon as the rifle can literally beat itself apart. To build a kit properly you really should have a press and jigs. Buy a completed rifle or do a conversion on a Saiga.
  6. They don't need to be in jail. Their punishment for their lax gun storage is that their son is dead. I can't think of a whole lot that would be worse.
  7. As others have stated, it doesn't change the effective pressure of the gas system. If you look at even a non-vented gas tube, there is a ton of clearance all around the gas piston, as gas will escape backwards through the stamped ribbing. The gas tube is not a pressure channel. The vented tubes were used on early AK-47s that did not have ported/vented gas blocks. The goal is to vent as much gas/carbon before it is blasted backwards towards into the receiver, or the shooter's face - there will certainly be enough blowby of the gas to do this if it's not vented immediately after the piston evacu
  8. CJ top and sliders look really good on your YJ. I don't care what anyone says about YJs, I've always liked the square headlights/boxy look. TJ owner myself, but there are plenty of times I would like to have a YJ too. I like the exterior and the utilitarian interior. Just don't care for the leaf-sprung ride, even on some of the OME sprung YJs that are supposed to be smooth rides, it's still pretty bad IMO.
  9. As far as the Cherokee goes, Chrysler did virtually nothing to the base design. 98-01 XJ was still mostly a rock-solid AMC design, with some styling improvements from Chrysler, and a very reliable EFI system for the 4.0. Unlike the rest of their product lineups at the time, the Cherokee was rarely plagued by gremlins because it was mechanically and electrically simple. It also has one of the most durable and reliable automatic transmissions in an SUV, the AW4. This is the same auto used in most Toyota trucks/SUVs. Unlike Explorers, Durangos, Blazers, etc. the Cherokee's transmission is general
  10. I was going to recommend a Cherokee as well, but with the last make being in 2001, many found in Montana will probably be higher miles and somewhat worn. You never know though. While a little light on comforts (I view this as a good thing; less to break down), the Cherokee is a very durable little SUV and gets a bit better mileage than other small SUVs in its class.
  11. The whole chain or just that store? Reason I ask is that I got a can a few days ago at Advance. The real pisser is that I called AutoZone first to save a longer drive and specifically asked for Duplicolor DE1634 and the guy looked it up and then verified it was on the shelf. When I got there I talked to the same guy and he showed me where it was. I said "Uh, this is Rustoleum." His reply was "Well, this is what it crossed over to but I guess I should have told you that since you were specific." Yeah, he should have. No, I didn't buy it. Yep, Autozone did this in all of their stores
  12. As much as I dislike Subarus because of the typical granola-fed Subaru driver of the PNW, honestly they are almost the perfect car for Montana. They will take a shit ton of abuse, more than any other type of vehicle in that class, while doing so in relative comfort and economy. AWD is a must IMO, and Subaru's symmetric AWD is best in class. They are easy as hell to repair, parts readily available, and reasonably cheap. I am not a Subaru owner but I won't ever deny the merits of these cars. Subaru has almost never put out a bad product. I would suggest you look on Craigslist in Washingt
  13. It gets worse. If I'm driving her car (which I bought so technically it's mine) she has sometimes reached over my arms to honk the horn. That's over the top. The last time she did it I pulled over on the side of a mountain pass highway, threw the keys on her lap, got out and started walking. She hasn't done it since. I swear to god if her car ever gets damaged by a rager, I'll cancel her insurance. She can pay for it on her own. This is really my only big gripe about my wife so I think I have it pretty good. Oh yeah.. A buddy of mine was four wheeling by himself in Capitol Forest,
  14. FYI an easy way to get the FSB centered is to place a straightedge against the RSB, one that is long enough to reach the FSB. Using a caliper, measure the space between the FSB and the straightedge on one side, then measure at the same location on the opposite side. Adjust FSB position as needed until both sides measure equally. The FSB is now centered.
  15. I've been buying lots of those 5 cent rings outside the grocery store.
  16. My wife will honk at other drivers, yell at them, flip them off if she gets mad enough with whatever the hell they're doing. Usually left lane campers on the freeway sets her off. Here's the kicker: when we first started dating, she blared her horn at a guy who sat at a stop sign too long. She was alone, and he got out and started coming at her car screaming. I guess he gave up on that when he realized it was a 20 year-old girl. She was so scared that she got no license plate, no make/model, nothing - just "green truck." I have tried to explain to her, what the hell are you gonna do if th
  17. My experience with Tula .223 has been very poor. It seems to be even worse if rebranded as Herter's. Incorrect setback & neck length, rusted cases, crooked bullets (seriously, some would wobble if rolled), and very weakly loaded. Will not buy again. Ever. Oddly enough they seem to do ok in 7.62x39, and I had some 9x18 Mak that was HOT.

  19. Izhmash will build you whatever you want if your sales contract is big enough. Several years ago when everyone wanted their Saiga to have dimples, Izhmash via RAA said "sure, but it will cost you," and next thing you know there were dimpled Saigas coming in. Also there are plenty of military overrun parts on Saigas. Lots of the Saigas here lately have proofed barrels with all the proper retainer cuts, etc. Makes a full conversion much easier. I agree with what Zen said in that thread. There has been evidence thrown around here and other places that SGLs are not converted in any way and
  20. Edit: I made this huge ass post on my phone and then realized you were talking anout modding AR mags. Fuck it here's the meat anyway. SOME magazines have stepped edges to limit the upward travel of the follower after the last round. This is plain as day when you look at the magazine itself. Most AK magazines are not of this type of design. Feed angle is extremely important, but few modifications made to AK magazines will change it. Most milspec AK mags set the feed angle as a function of the internal follower shape - if you disassemble the magazine you will see that the follower is designe

  22. I don't think you fully understood the joke.
