  1. I’ve notched out the factory hand guard as mentioned above and it works but here’s the problem as I see it. The bottom of the Ultimak is wider than the section you notch out of the factory handguard. I ran it that way for a while but then the grip (or lack of) became annoying. If you are going to do a lot of shooting you *may* be better served by investing retainer and handguard , it’s just a better fit IMO. I’m sure it’s been posted before but here's the parts list I used on my S762 & S223. You could buy the KVFS-B hand guard directly for Ultimak. Dinzagarms has the steel retainer, visi
  2. Does that one in question happen to accidentally fall out allot? It will not fall out unless you release it. I have the Saiga in 7.62x39 so out of habit I’d still grab the S223 mag release. If you only have the one Saiga you perhaps could force yourself to remember not to grab the S223 mag release. For me toggling between the S223 and S762 at the range I would always continue to grab the S223 mag release. If you are going to do the old adapter you could probably modify S223 mag release to lock-it-out with a small machine screw. I attached two pics one is the Old adapter where you *could p
  3. If you go with the Bastard without the LRBHO the hammer is a non-issue. You only need the hammer re-profiled for the LRBHO if you use a Tapco hammer. If you use the stock hammer (in your Tapco trigger) no mod is needed. I don’t know how they package them now but when they first deployed the Bastards the LRBHO was an add-on. Personally now that I’ve experienced the LRBHO it be hard to go back but that’s your call. Good luck on whichever way you go.
  4. Thank you Sir. Unfortunately they all three have to be milled. My gut feeling is we are OK with the .223/5.56 because the recoil is non-existent however if there were a mod for the Saiga 308 to accept US 308 mags and it required milling I’d probably stay clear of that one based on the recoil alone.
  5. Would be nice if you would go into the pros and cons of each so people on the forum can make an informed decision. There is not much info out there about these and a review like that would be greatly beneficial to all IMO. Without indorsing one system over the other both work and work well. Simply put the “send away” job is done by professionally and really comes out nice if you especially if you opt for their finish. You end up with a steel adapter riveted to the receiver and excellent functionally with their mag and bolt release. It’s a very solid install. You get a strong & unique
  6. I have one of each, the “send away job” as you call it and I did the MSA Bastard install myself. I will not be doing any head to head reviews, nor will I get into the pros and cons of each. I’ll just say I’m glad to have both. Since you already determined you don’t want the “send away job” I’d suggest staying away from the adapter in post #2 and get the Bastard. Both the Bastard and OLD adapter were from the same company (minus a name change) but with the Bastard you get LRBHO and you don’t have to worry about accidentally ejecting the adapter in post#2.
  7. Here you go, probably everything you wanted to know about 5.56x45 Nato. Here’s a good thread on AK Files on the subject, maybe not what you asked but a good read nevertheless. I found this reply about the bootleg Nato interesting.
  8. Here’s another post on the subject from AR15.com some back & forth but some good points made as well IMO. I have the Saiga chambered in .223, 7.62 and 308 and all I shoot in them is Russian ammo.
  9. is the SLR-106 barrel the same as the Saiga 223 barrel?
  10. The cavity is called the “puddle” where the active weld it being applied. As mentioned above the person (or robot) just pulled out. I use to weld for a living a long time ago and when I ended a weld I would always back-feed the puddle so you didn’t have the crater, it don’t matter if it Mig, Tig or Stick (aka Arc Welding) IMO it is alway a good practice to fill the puddle in. It could a few things, like if the metal was cold before being welded but probably just bad there...
  11. That’s really up to you if you want to upgrade or not.... Whatever you do you it’s probably still a good idea to get the front sight tool. I have the Tapco AK/SKS Military Grade Windage & Elevation Sight Tool and it’s very solid but you still need to oil the shit out of it before moving. IMO for the money the Tapco is the best one out there, I’ve seen them on eBay for under < $20 shipped to US lower 48 states. Good luck with your new Saiga, there are many good rifles out there but it’s hard to find anything more fun to shoot.
  12. Work in progress build on left, I have a set of Meprolight Tru-Dot Night sights coming in to finish it up, may sling it later... I really like the AR STYLE ALUMINUM FOREARM from CSS. S762 to right has UltiMAK Optic Mount with Bushnell RedDot. Both are a blast to shoot
  13. Firing pin & extractor, extractor parts....
  14. Thanks for the info, ordered 300rds of PMC X-TAC 5.56NATO 62GR @ $144.99. promo code knocked off S&H. so not bad, we could always use extra .223/5.56
  15. If it is less milling I’m in for another… Please advise when you are ready to deploy the new release. I have a second S223 that I like to apply the adapter upgrade. You may remember I did one of the first Bastard installs after your initial roll-out (of the Bastard) and so far so good. The S223 with Bastard is one of my favorite rifles and it has performed flawlessly. This way I could go with a single mag solution for my rifles chambered in .223/5.56.
  16. both are nicely done...
  17. Yep that’s Bushnell I had squirreled away in the parts box. It makes it so much more enjoyable to shoot because I was struggling with the iron sights. My second Ultimak mount arrived yesterday for my S223. I was undecided which way to go but decided yesterday to spend the extra and go with the suggested forend so the S223 is still a work in progress. once completed it should look similar to the one on the Ultimak website
  18. I understand, I like the full size scope on the S308 just couldn’t do it here. I was trying to go with iron sights only but at my age I need help
  19. FWIW I just installed the UltiMAK Optics Mount on my S762 with a cheap Bushnell Micro Dot. It took some time but I notched out the original forend, In fact I liked it so much I just ordered another Untimak for my S223 which sort of been my project rifle for the last year. That might be good for you because you don't want a short forend due to the long barrel. I have the full size scope and side rail on my S308 but it's kind of clunky compared to this setup, plus you can cowitness.. Not that this will do you any good but I'm going to try and fit my Tapco forgrip to the Untimak when I do th
  20. I didn't have the "follow this post" enabled so that was the reason delayed reply. It was just a general question, I was just wondering if you (or the other S12 member)s thought they are worth investing in for spares or is that overkill?
  21. sorry didn't have follow on, what do you think any good?
  22. I know this is sort an post but I remembered seeing it. anyway I just stumbled on these guys , I don't know anything about them but them but figured I post it back in your thread. They say "If you have a Firing Pin we can make it" so that may work for you. Let me know what you think, I'd like to pickup a Titanium spare myself
  23. It's a NCStar 3-7x30 scope, not sure on the mount and it mounts on the rear sight base, with a pin through the hole and grubscrews that tighten down on the receiver. The scope may go in favour of a rear iron sight. It sort of looks like the "Darrel mount" some guys prefer to use them because you don’t have to drill the gun and you could easily return it to stock. I had put one on my M91/30 but took it off because I could never get scope it zeroed. In my case I had a Simmons LER (long eye relief) scope which was a real POS. I believe the mount was solid but didn’t have any luck with the sco
