  1. Just a heads up, if there are the "sanitized" and painted black magazines that are sold as "Bulgarian" surplus, most of them are in fact Izhmash plum colored magazines with black paint. Word is that the Russians gave a bunch of magazines to the Bulgarians before they were set up to make their own. Aparrently they were sanitized so that if any were left anywhere by Bulgarian soldiers, it wouldn't come back on Russia... Under the paint I'll bet yours look like these: One of mine was shiny plum, the other three were matte plum. I have four of these, and most of them you can see the mark if
  2. Peel the insulation off the stock on the folder and it would look infinitely better. A simple paracord wrap will look much better, and in a pinch you'll have a lot of paracord to use for....anything you need. Also, it needs an upper handguard. The way things sit now, it still gets my vote though.
  3. No problem man. As Spikester said as well, you may want to shorten the lever too so that it doesn't stick down as far next to the trigger. I shortened mine quite a bit actually. Also another thing I did was to put a slight champfer into the BHO plate where the pin from the hammer. This also makes installation much easier as it doesn't have to be aligned perfectly.
  4. If you look at the hammer as it sits in the rifle you will see the area that the pin goes through. You need to trim down the right side of this area by the thickness of the BHO lever. I would also recommend using a hacksaw blade or cut off wheel in a dremel to make a very small groove on the area where the spring engages the "plate" of the BHO. This gives the spring a place to rest and makes it more secure. Not hard to do at all.
  5. Jumping the gun here, but for a version in a rifle you will need to have it "forked" so that it engages the rounds on either side of the magazine. I think you might have a problem running out of clearance with the part of the bolt that engages the rounds.
  6. I hope it sells for you, but I will be back to see how it's broken up. I don't have the funds for another whole rifle... Good luck man.
  7. New Chinese style chest rig (hold 3mags+4grenades) -$9 Surplus USMC LBV (6ar mags+2grenades) -$9 I would like both of these. Sending PM now.
  8. Yea if you did thread it you would have to make a new handle, but I would trust it more than brazing or welding alone.
  9. Bulgarian AK74 gas tube dropped in on my 5.45. I also ran my 5.45 with a Romanian tube from an AKM without problems. The lugs on the rear were different slightly and I had to make sure I pressed it down where it seated while turning the latch, but once in, it worked 100%.
  10. Tap the hole, thread the new handle, screw it in, then weld it. Best solution I can think of at the moment.
  11. In my experience they are absolute garbage for AK magazines. They do work like a charm for SKS mags though, as that's what they were designed for. You have to slip it onto the magazine just right, and then you have about a 1/1000 chance that the rounds might not bind in the stripper because of the curve and the awkward way you have to put pressure on them. I'd look for one with the feeder bar, as that seems to be EXACTLY what those Chinese loaders would need to work on AK mags.
  12. I want to see it. I'm all about DIY on the cheap. Also, is your design for a shotgun or rifle?
  13. I like that it looks light, I hate that it's got all this extra crap for an AK stock.
  14. Actually a 5.45 just has a threaded sight block installed. As far as I have ever heard or seen no Russian 5.45 has a threaded barrel. The 14x1 LH threads are from the AKM. When the AK74 was introduced it came with a sight block that has threads and not the barrel. Why the change? I have no clue.
  15. I'm at a loss why you think our observations must be misguided. I did not ever say it mattered to the function of the gun one bit. It does, in my experience, leave the bolt carrier, gas piston and receiver much cleaner after a shooting session. Does that mean that it must absolutely be done or the rifle will malfunction? I posted what I have seen personally. I do have an appointment for an eye test coming up though, I'll edit my post if I find that I may have been mistaken.
  16. I vote to get a laminate stock if it came with a polymer. I just like the small carbines with a wood stock. Simple, comfortable and proven.
  17. How many times does this have to be asked and answered? Jeez-o-pete. Gas tubes do nothing but guide the gas piston. Want proof? Take your gas tubes off and go shoot your guns (you won't hurt anything). You'll figure it out. So why are some made with holes and some aren't? In my experience the vent holes serve more to keep the action clean. Venting the gas up at the gas block means it doesn't vent out under your rear sight. Debris is deposited up into the air and around the gas block/tube area instead of underneath the rear sight and into the receive

    Got a few ?'s

Yeah, I have only read it on the internet. I do not have an AK74 bolt to compare with or measure, so I cannot confirm or deny.
  19. Actually I'd bet that Beryl rail is the real deal, and not the DPH copy. Polish Beryl

    Got a few ?'s

Has anyone actually tried a 74 bolt in their carrier to check? Other than maybe a cam angle difference they look identical from images. The AKM bolt is obviously way different. I'm not saying it's true, but I have read that the AK100 series bolt is of a smaller diameter than the AK74 bolt.

I would go for 5.45 personally. Mags can be had for 10 bucks each, and surplus ammo is dirt cheap. You can get it online for about $260 bucks for 2160 rounds delivered to your door. Ballistics wise I can't really say for sure. I know the govt is looking at other options due to the performance drop that 5.56 takes in a short barreled rifle. I have heard that 7.62 is usually very close in performance from a 16 inch barrel to a Draco pistol barrel. No clue on how barrel length effects 5.45 though.
  22. The 5.45 as far as I have ever heard, and the one I converted, does NOT have threads under the sight block. This is most likely because the military ones have threads on the sight block itself and they are 24x1.5mm threads. So, as far as I know, none of the 5.45 barrels are ever threaded at the factory for any of the weapons they put them in. That said, mine did have the grooves for the retainer already on it from the factory. I figure they probably put identical barrels in all of their 5.45 builds, regardless of where they are going, as this would make costs cheaper because they don't have to
  23. In my opinion wait for a 5.45 I just love that round. Best case scenario would be for you to get a 7.62 and a 5.45 as once you have one, you'll want the other to go with it.
  24. Are you sure it's 22mm? As far as I know the Bulgarian and Russian 74's all used 24mm only. I believe the 22mm is either Polish or Romanian.
  25. IMO you should just shoot dominant hand, dominant eye. If they are different, so what? You will always be naturally better with your dominant hand/eye no matter how much you practice with the other one.
