  1. I have never seen #00 buck for a 20 gauge. I don't see how it will stack in a 20 gauge. The Federal #2 load is the most effective I have found, but also the most recoil. Handloaders have loaded #1 buck in the 20 gauge, it will stack side by side, the same way that #000 stacks in the 12. There is at least one boutique loader who makes a couple of examples, though I haven't tested it. At close range, #3 works very well indeed.
  2. Managed to pick up some 2 3/4 shells today. Didn't get to give it a real good workout, but fired a few shots, and it does look like it will be just fine. This has been a long term project, and it is still not finished yet. I am close though. I need to paint it, but I am waiting until after I give it a real good work out.
  3. I got mine yesterday, but I haven't had the opportunity to use it yet. Imagine my disgust when I could only find 5 2 3/4" shells to load it with! Plenty of 3", but only 5 2 3/4"! So an actual range report will have to wait. It does fit nicely, and everything looks good so far. Maybe I can get some 2 3/4" shells and shoot it next week.
  4. As long as they were reliable, I would buy either one. I would definitely like 3" for those special occasions.
  5. My slug mould is a Foster. They weigh 352 grains when cast with soft lead, with a little tin mixed. I would guess it is about 30 to 1. They measure .610", which will fall right through my Saiga barrel, then just barely make it through the choke with light finger pressure. Haven't got any loaded yet, I need components also. I think this slug will also fit in the Ballistic Products 12 gauge shot cup. So I intend to try it in my Benelli, also. 3 pellets of 00 buck and the Lyman Foster slug should make for an interesting 12 gauge load. There is lots of room in a 3" 20 gauge shell. Mi
  6. Its good to see progress! For what its worth, all of my factory mags also fit rock solid. If any one has to drop out of testing, I volunteer to take their place. I have a fairly decent stock of shells hoarded away, depleted only slightly by last Saturday's range trip. I am happy to report that my new Ace stock is quite comfortable, and I am still considering camo patterns at this moment. My Lyman slug mould has even seen some use recently.
  7. It does look good with a maple stock. I also think it would look good with my ace stock, (if I can ever get it painted). My S20 has been sitting in the back for too long. The ace stock will help, but it also needs some more mags. So I am going to follow this thread with interest. If you want to sell them unfinished, that would be cool. I am a home park and gun-kote/duracoat WECSOGer from way back.
  8. OK, its a work in progress, but at least I finally made some progress! Seems like projects take longer to complete than they used to. That's why I eat healthy and exercise. Eventually, I will paint this one in a nice camo finish. Not sure what, but that is another thing about projects. You get to change your mind along the way.
  9. Sportsman Guide offers a Danish surplus ammo pouch. The price was right, so I bought some to check their suitability for FN P90 mags. While they will indeed work for that application, they will also hold the 10 rounders. Perhaps not every one's cup of tea, but the price is right.
  10. You mean you can tell the difference between a thief and a liberal? Is it because the thief is more polite?
  11. I tried reversing the follower last week end. It does not work for me. Its a shame. Guess I will just have to learn to live with swapping mags. I was amazed at the Tapco folding stock holding up to everything I threw at it. It feels flimsy, but seems to work. Not real comfortable with 3" slugs, though.
  12. So all you do is cut the tang and then bolt it to the back? Sounds like a good idea. I am usually the last to get the word. May have to try this.
  13. How exactly is this Ace "Cut the dang tang" receiver block attached? From the name I assume that you cut the tangs, (or tang?), off of the original rear trunnion. (Poor choice of name there, IMHO). Is there any other drilling or cuttiing or tapping required? I went to the Ace website, but they do not provide much of an explanation there. What are the advantages? It looks shorter than the old style adapter that I have seen pics of. Is that the only advantage? What are the disadvantages? This thread hi-jack is now over, you may return to your originally scheduled progra
  14. The way I see it the big advantage of the pistol grip conversion is that the gun is comfortable to shoulder and fire, but the overall length is greatly reduced. A friend of mine did what you suggested. While it looked good, and was comfortable to fire, it was definitely longer than a converted pg Saiga. I converted my Saiga, and then he converted his. I don't miss the old stock at all.
  15. The Federal 3" #2 buck load is the one that patterns best in my Saiga. You can purchase this load, as well as many others, online at Cheaper Than Dirt. The recoil may be just a little bit too much for my Tapco folding stock, but it hasn't collapsed yet!
  16. I don't think my Saiga-20 kicks too bad with 2 3/4" shells, but when I feed it the 3" it reminds me of a 12 gauge. If she is recoil intolerant the .410 might be appropriate.
  17. 3" Federal steel, and lead, and slugs, all work fine in my Saiga. The steel does require the other setting to operate however. The Federal 3" #2 buck is my favorite. With the folding stock a little goes a long way, however.
  18. Tapco has a folding stock advertised. If all goes well, about the middle of next September, I would like to assemble an AK. My question is, has anyone seen or used this stock? Is it comfortable, rugged, that kind of thing? I have a Polytech pre-ban with a side folder. So it is quite possible I would not be satisfied with the Tapco stock. Any comments or suggestions? The other alternative I have looked at is quite a bit more expensive. The Ace stock looks good. Patiently waiting for the sunset.
  19. IOW, nothing about tubular magazines. According to the law, there is no difference, other than a removable magazine. A belt for a Browning machinegun is a high cap magazine. If you have a shotgun with an extended magazine, which does not have a pistol grip, (Benelli comes to mind), go ahead. If it has the pistol grip, console yourself with the 5 round mag. (until the AWB sunsets.) If you have a pump gun, blast away!
  20. Pre-ban pump? Does my take down Remington model 10 count? The tube magazine detaches from the receiver. Of course, the barrel is attached to it! Modify all the new mags that you want. Just don't modify them to fit a semi-auto if the modification allows for more than 10 round capacity. Don't modify them so they will not operate in the original gun. Last gun show I bought a SIG P229. Before I got it out the door, 3 different people asked me if it was a pre-ban. It doesn't matter!
  21. Try the Federal 3"! They offer 2 varieties. I have tried the Power-Shok. There is another, more expensive loading. I have not found any for sale yet, though. I have not had much success using the 2 3/4" shells in the 3" mags. Buckshot and slug loads are more reliable, birdshot seems to offer problems. I am not too sure why this is. Since the #2buck loads are only available in 3" I will most likely stay with them.
  22. This is a comment separate from the imported Saiga mag subject. I don't see any thing any where that suggests that I can not use a legal, pe-ban mag in a pistol made after '94. I don't own one, but if my P226, which I bought in 1989, lays down, I would have no qualms about purchasing a brand new P226, and using my old, still legal, 15 round magazines. Now, about the Saiga mags. I don't see anything in the AWB which would apply to them. The trouble I do see is that Saiga's are imported as sporting guns. Therefore, 8 & 10 round mags might be viewed as "unsportiing". However, my
  23. Better late than never! I recently tested Federal's 3" 20 gauge #2 buckshot load. This is the one! Much better pattern than anyone's #3 loads. Significantly heavier pellets, also. This is the one!
  24. OK, so I have been outbid. That is the nature of the capitalist system. I bet whoever outbid me reads this very forum. I would like a range report. I suspect more mags will be available from the same source. Congratulations on winning the auction! Good luck to you. I have found that the Federal 3" #2buck performs best in myn Saiga-20. Let us know how the 8 and 10 rd mags perform.
  25. I am well pleased with my new Saiga-20 except I wish it would shoot a tighter pattern with buckshot. All I have tried so far is 3" 24 pellet #3 buck, from 2 different manufactures, not much difference, both of them really scatter! Next, I am going to try Federal's 3" 18 pellet #2 buck load. Anyone have experience with these? If they don't do the trick, I may have to break down and look at threading the barrel for choke tubes.
