FYI There are lots of good companies making excellent 10/22 parts.

Volquartsen parts are good and all that, but paying for their name is like buying Monster audio cables. Power custom hammer kit does the job very well.

Theres nothing wrong with stock irons... But I would not be able to shoot a group that fits 10 shots under a dime at 50 yards with the irons like I can with my scope...

If *YOU* can shoot 10 shots in that small an area with the irons at 50, I would love to see it... cause we are going on the road for the exhibition matches we are going to hit, and make a fortune!!!  My eyes are just not THAT good!!!! I NEED the optic when I want to shoot EXACTLY what I am aiming at! LOL

Same here, my eyes aren't very good. I've worn glasses since I was 11 for nearsighted and astigmatism. Optic sights work much better for me!

I have the stainless/poly-stock 10/22 with an Aimpoint sight I took off a pistol I don't shoot much anymore, works great!. I'm perfectly happy with the stock ... stock. ;) It's such a small rifle anyway, I don't plan on making it shorter. I did just order 2 BC 25-rnd. mags and the BC reloader, thanks to this thread. :D

I'm right there with you Indy. I still like shooting irons, but my eyes just ain't what they used to be.

+1 on what Indy said. The stock Irons are OK irons, but glass is always better. You can clearly see exactly what you are shooting at, and faster, if you have a good cheek weld. iron sights always cover a big chunk of your field of vision just where you need it most. A scope reticle gives you an uncluttered close-up.

I used to have above average vision, and I preferred a variable power scope even then. In the last few years, I have gotten glasses, and clearly distinguishing a sight picture above 75 yards is very difficult.

For under $200 you can find the Archangel Nomad Kit (formally known as the Maruader Kit) and turn your Ruger into what appears to be a full size G36. Midway currently has them for around $160 through end of May I believe. If you look up Archangel Maruader on Youtube, you see how nice they look.

DIY - definately the Auto Bolt Release filing - also on youtube for How To

i just got this one yesterday.....a MUST HAVE for 10/22 owners ........... its shoots the same as my old-school mid 80's carbine. 1" @ 50yds and 2" @100 yds shooting blazer.after my redneck trigger work and internal mods. for anyone who doesnt believe breaking it down doesnt affect accuracy...it doesnt.i will only break it down to clean barrel to reduce wear or to pack it up. next move is to get a compact 3x9 scope to make it fit in the bag !! neat lil gun

Hate the stock sights... recommendations?

Tech Sights

I added Tech Sights to mine and I love them. They sit higher than the factory sights and the front sight is also taller so I don't have to lower my head. I would love to see the rear sight made with a built in scope rail for those who use scopes.

Hate the stock sights... recommendations?

I adapted my stock using a machined adapter to use an AR retractable stock similar to the Tapco one. Someone in Michigan beat me to it and made a retractable stock with a straight line before me. I did this in 2006 before Tapco made theirs. I wanted my children to be able use it as they grow while I would use it with the stock extended. I used a Yugo AK grip which had to be replaced for the idiotic USC922r with a US made part.

I would love to see an AK style stock for the 10/22 like the Pro Mag Archangel stock which makes it look like an AR-15. The Krinker Plinker was nice but it cost too much ($350).

Quick and easy mods:

1) Power custom hammer brings it down to a nice and manageable pull weight.

2) I love the PWS extended magazine release.

3) BX-25 magazines are a long awaited gem.

4) Auto bolt release makes the BHO easier to use, but can be done with some careful filing on the original piece.

5) Tech sights, because great irons are better than ok irons. A scope could also work well.

The stock barrel is great for a plinker. The only reason you should be dropping some serious coin on a .920 barrel is if you dig the looks, or you plan on going for a suppressor. I'm saving up my pennies for one- any suggestions?

Edit: BEWARE!!! Improving these can add up over time and be more addictive than mosinitis.

I hear great things about Green Mountain barrels, but just about everywhere is out of the ones I want. Anyone have experience with EABCO? http://www.eabco.com/store/products/Threaded_Ruger_10_22_Accuracy_Barrel_Blue-5-0.html

I have an ER Shaw bull barrel from EABCO. It is fantastic. It is very accurate, and I haven't experienced any ejection problems that are sometimes common with cheaper ammo and the Bentz match bore. I can recommend them.

I think this new break-down version is what's finally going to get me to jump on the 10/22 bandwagon.

  • 2 weeks later...

Got my barrel from eabco. Took it out to the range today. Shoots great, but man that stock trigger pull is heavy! I see a new trigger in my future. But this thing is getting expensive...oh well I guess that's why I work...

I decided to add a retractable stock to my 10/22 before Tapco made theirs. I had a threaded adapter made from aluminum bar stock and I got a stock. I then cut off the stock and built up a conventional grip with epoxy and fiberglass.

Later I decided that I didn't like that configuration and I had an AK pistol grip which was replaced to comply with the USC922r when I built an AK so I used the grip. I included both configurations. I also made the foregrip narrower since it is too wide. I also added the Tech Sights which include a rear sight which screws on the receiver and a taller front sight. I added a flash suppressor which is not really needed since .22 long rifle rounds don't have much flash but it looks cool. After the photo was taken the stock was varnished to look like wood again. I also replaced the push button magazine release to a lever type.

Thanks to a SAW grip donated by RED333, a killer deal on a BC folding stock from RedChallenger, and the advice of everyone else, I was able to finish my 10/22 for now. I'm still thinking about adding a small rail forward of the rear sight and mounting a small PA dot sight, but I think I'll stock up on mags before I go there.

img0070og.jpg

I spent a lot of time properly fitting the stock and even mounted a bolt to the rear to give the receiver a solid shelf for it to ride against... one of the big complaints about the BC stocks. It took three hours tonight to dremel/file/sand in order to fit the SAW grip, but I've mated it up really nice and have it secured with a stainless 3/8 bolt up the middle and a smaller screw behind the trigger. The whole feel of the gun is solid... I'm super pleased. I'm going to take it out for a couple hundred rounds tomorrow and see how it shoots. With the factory stock and the Tech Sights, I was able to nail a Monster can at 100 yards 4 outta 5 shots with Stingers and a good rest. As long as I can repeat that with the new setup, I probably won't even worry about working on the trigger.
