Drug laws are just about as blatantly nonsensical as firearms laws. Just sayin'.

Bit of trivia, Marijuana is labeled by the DEA as a hallucinogenic. Also, the schedule does not have to do with how deadly it is. Schedule 1 drugs are considered to have no medicinal purpose and a high possibility for abuse. Ironically, cocaine was once a widely used over the counter pain medicine and is now on there (dentists would pack the hold from removed teeth with it even). Heroin is also on there yet almost all of the powerful pain killers are opiate derivitives or synthetics.

 

From a personal perspecitve, havin been tasked with encorcong drug laws i do not find them nearly as assinine as gun laws. The only problem with enforcing them is that it is not possible. It would be akin to prohibition or shuttin off the internet. It is considered a victory to slow the drug trade in an area for a short time. We had a million dollar bust and all it did was make the cost of marijuana go up for the user for a couple weeks and make it a little harder to find. When you see an agency dedicate hundreds of man hours (cost money per hour), dedicate resources (cost money), and at the same time neglect other services to do these busts it is a backward system. Spending $20,000 worth of time, money, and manpower to take down a midlevel guy hardly seems worth the trouble, yet that is "the normal".
